INTRODUCTION
Our thirst for technology is a part of everything we do. The Data Center Engineering team takes the physical design of our data centers into the future. Our lab mirrors a research and development department -- cutting-edge strategies are born, tested and tested again. Along with a team of great minds, you take on complex topics like how we use power or how to run state-of-the-art, environmentally-friendly facilities. You're a visionary who optimizes for efficiencies and never stops seeking improvements -- even small changes that can make a huge impact. You generate ideas, communicate recommendations to senior-level executives and drive implementation alongside facilities technicians. With your technical expertise, you ensure compliance with codes and standards, develop infrastructure improvements and serve as an expert in your specialty (e.g., cooling, electrical).
ABOUT THE JOB
As a Data Center Engineer, you will be a technical lead within the Data Center Delivery and Engineering (DCDE) team. In this role, you will serve as a highly motivated Electrical Engineer and Technical Program Manager, leveraging your demonstrated design, construction, equipment operation, and maintenance experience in the area of mission-critical facilities. You will be involved in the development of electrical systems ranging from incoming utility design down to the rack. Your involvement will span the entire project life-cycle, starting at due diligence, progressing through construction and commissioning, and developing into sustaining support for the internal operations team. You will provide technical leadership in a matrix organization, preparing critical documentation such as facility audits, total cost of ownership (TCO) analyses, and concept design reviews to ensure successful product delivery. Behind everything our users see online is the architecture built by the Technical Infrastructure team to keep it running. From developing and maintaining our data centers to building the next generation of Google platforms, we make Google's product portfolio possible. We're proud to be our engineers' engineers and love voiding warranties by taking things apart so we can rebuild them. We keep our networks up and running, ensuring our users have the best and fastest experience possible.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 10 years of experience in mission critical facility design and construction environments.
- 6 years of experience in bidding, designing, operating, and commissioning electrical distribution systems from high voltage (HV) transformer to branch circuits.
- 6 years of experience with mission-critical facilities, with a focus on market-available data center multi-tenant facilities (colocation).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master's degree in Engineering, Business or other relevant field.
- Professional Engineering (PE) license.
- Experience with cross-functional teams to demonstrate an understanding of interrelated issues, including structural, civil, IT/Telecom, security, mechanical, and architectural aspects.
- Experience preparing technical documentation including facility review checklists, facility audits, statements of work (SOW), and total cost of ownership (TCO) analysis.
- Ability to demonstrate fluency in design software and analysis of electrical power systems within a matrix organization.
- Ability to travel 30% of the time domestically and internationally.
Responsibilities
- Perform technical evaluations and due diligence of market available multi-tenant facilities (i.e. colocation) for the deployment of Google services and critical infrastructure.
- Manage power system challenges across the project lifecycle, during concept design, detailed design, procurement, bidding, manufacturing, delivery, installation and commissioning on site.
- Identify and resolve issues raised by the cross functional teams and various external stakeholders.
- Understand and evaluate data center designs based on program requirements, level of redundancy, availability aims, risks, and identifying potential single points of failure in the design.
- Interface closely with cross-functional groups, such as the Third-Party Data Center Operations (3PDC-Ops), Energy and Land Strategy (ELS), and Front End Planning (FEP) teams to deliver the electrical solutions to third-party data center projects.

Translate your Australian credentials precisely
USCIS evaluates your degree field against the role's technical requirements. A degree in network engineering, computer science, or electrical engineering maps cleanly to data center roles. A general IT degree may require a credential evaluation to confirm specialty occupation equivalency.
Filter employers by active LCA filing history
Target employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for infrastructure or systems engineering roles. Companies already familiar with LCA certification through DOL are far less likely to withdraw an offer when they learn E-3 visa is required.
Use Migrate Mate to manage your LCA and paperwork
The LCA must be DOL-certified before your consulate appointment, and the sequencing matters. Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork so nothing delays your start date after the offer is signed.
Clarify shift and travel requirements before filing
Data center roles often involve on-call rotations or multi-site coverage. If your LCA lists one primary worksite but the role requires regular work at other locations, the LCA may need an amendment before DOL will certify it.
Time your consulate appointment around your start date
E-3 consulate appointments at Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth have varying wait times. Request an appointment as soon as your LCA is certified so you can start on the agreed date, especially for roles with critical infrastructure responsibilities.
Prepare for specialty occupation questions at interview
Consular officers assess whether your role genuinely requires a degree, not just prefers one. Bring your job offer letter, a role description that specifies required qualifications, and your transcripts to document that your degree directly supports the position.
E-3 Visa Senior Data Center Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I find Senior Data Center Engineer jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lists Senior Data Center Engineer roles from employers who have confirmed E-3 sponsorship availability. Because the E-3 has no annual cap and no lottery, employers willing to file an LCA face a much simpler process than H-1B visa sponsorship, which expands your pool of viable opportunities compared to other work visa categories.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Senior Data Center Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
Yes, in most cases. USCIS requires that the position normally demands a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific technical field such as network engineering, computer science, or electrical engineering. Roles focused on infrastructure design, systems architecture, or capacity planning consistently meet this standard. Generalist or facilities-only positions with no engineering degree requirement may not qualify.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Senior Data Center Engineers?
The E-3 has no annual lottery and no numerical cap, so your employer can file any time of year and expect a predictable outcome. The H-1B is capped at 85,000 per fiscal year and subject to a randomised lottery, which means qualified candidates are frequently not selected. For Australian nationals, the E-3 is the more reliable path into U.S. data center roles.
Can I change data center employers while on an E-3 visa?
Yes, but you can't simply transfer your current E-3 to a new employer. Your new employer must file a fresh LCA with DOL and you'll need to attend a new consulate appointment or apply for a change of status. There's no formal grace period defined in E-3 regulations, so coordinating your last day with your new LCA certification timeline is essential.
