Frame your degree as specialty occupation evidence
Consular officers assess whether your specific engineering or computer science degree directly supports an FDE role. Prepare a one-page credential summary mapping your Australian qualifications to U.S. specialty occupation standards before you start applying.
Target companies with active LCA filing history
Search the DOL's Office of Foreign Labor Certification disclosure data for employers who have filed LCAs under software or systems engineering job categories. Prior LCA activity signals an established E-3 sponsorship workflow, reducing delays after you receive an offer.
Clarify the client-site deployment question upfront
FDE roles often involve working at customer sites rather than your employer's registered address. Your LCA must list the correct worksite locations. Raise this with your hiring contact before the offer stage so the employer files the LCA accurately from the start.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for offer-to-consulate paperwork
Once you have a signed offer, use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA submission and DS-160 preparation. This avoids the most common filing errors that delay consulate appointments for technical roles with complex job descriptions.
Request an itinerary addendum for multi-site roles
If your FDE contract covers multiple customer locations across different states, ask your employer to include a deployment schedule as supporting documentation. USCIS and consular officers reviewing specialty occupation claims for traveling technical roles look for this level of specificity.
Prepare a technical scope statement for your interview
Consular officers may ask you to explain how your day-to-day work differs from general software support. A concise written summary of your implementation methodology, tools you deploy, and the client outcomes you drive strengthens your specialty occupation case in the interview room.
E-3 Visa Senior Forward Deployed Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Senior Forward Deployed Engineer jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Australian professionals seeking U.S. roles with E-3 sponsorship. Search by job title and filter for employers with verified E-3 or LCA filing history. Because FDE roles sit at the intersection of engineering and customer success, searching both categories improves your results significantly.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Senior Forward Deployed Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for E-3?
Yes, provided the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field such as computer science, systems engineering, or software engineering. Roles that frame the position as requiring any bachelor's degree regardless of field, or that treat the degree as preferred rather than required, can create specialty occupation problems at the consulate. Your offer letter and job description should specify the degree field explicitly.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Senior Forward Deployed Engineers?
The E-3 has no annual lottery, so you can apply any time of year after receiving a job offer. H-1B requires winning a random lottery that runs once annually in March, with results typically in April. For FDE roles, where offers often have fast start dates tied to client implementation cycles, the E-3's year-round availability and four-to-six week processing timeline is a practical advantage.
Can my E-3 visa cover work at multiple customer sites across different U.S. states?
Yes, but the LCA must account for all primary worksites. If you're deployed across multiple states regularly, your employer may need to file a blanket LCA or list each location. The DOL requires the prevailing wage determination to reflect conditions in each work location, so a single-city LCA doesn't automatically cover nationwide deployment. Confirm the filing scope with your employer before the LCA is submitted.
