Align your portfolio to U.S. specialty occupation standards
Your portfolio needs to demonstrate that game design at your level requires a specific bachelor's-level field, not just general creativity. Showcase shipped titles, lead design credits, and GDD authorship to support the specialty occupation case your employer will file.
Target studios with prior E-3 or H-1B filing history
Search the DOL's OFLC disclosure data for studios that have filed Labor Condition Applications for game designer or related roles. Prior filings mean their HR and legal teams already understand the process, which cuts your onboarding friction significantly.
Request the LCA before your start date is locked in
Your employer must file the Labor Condition Application with the DOL and receive certification before you can attend your consulate interview. Build at least three to four weeks of LCA processing time into your timeline when negotiating your start date.
Prepare an Australian credential equivalency letter early
Australian three-year bachelor's degrees are generally accepted as equivalent to U.S. four-year degrees for E-3 visa purposes, but you'll need documentation to support that. Obtain a credential evaluation from a USCIS-recognized evaluation service before your employer submits the LCA.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for the full process
Once you have an offer, Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service handles your LCA submission, DS-160 preparation, and consulate appointment documentation end-to-end, so neither you nor your employer needs to manage government filings independently.
Clarify remote-versus-onsite work location on the LCA
The LCA must list the specific worksite address where you'll primarily perform the role. If your studio operates across multiple offices or offers a hybrid arrangement, confirm the designated work location with your employer before DOL filing to avoid a certified LCA that doesn't match your actual work arrangement.
E-3 Visa Senior Game Designer: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Senior Game Designer jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Most studio job postings don't explicitly advertise E-3 sponsorship because it's less familiar to U.S. employers than the H-1B visa. Migrate Mate surfaces Senior Game Designer roles from employers with active E-3 or H-1B visa filing history, so you're targeting studios already set up to sponsor Australian professionals rather than educating every recruiter from scratch.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Senior Game Designer role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
Yes, provided the role requires a bachelor's degree in a specific related field such as game design, interactive media, computer science, or digital arts, and your employer can document that requirement. Generalist or junior roles that accept any degree regardless of field are harder to support. Senior-level positions with design system ownership, lead credits, or technical design responsibilities typically meet the specialty occupation threshold more cleanly.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Senior Game Designer roles?
The E-3 has no annual cap and no lottery, so you can apply at any point in the year and receive a decision based on your individual case. The H-1B is capped at 85,000 per year and requires a lottery selection before you can even file. For Australian game designers, the E-3 eliminates the single biggest source of uncertainty in the U.S. work visa process entirely.
Can I change studios while on an E-3 as a Senior Game Designer?
Yes, but you need a new LCA certified by the DOL and a new E-3 visa stamp before starting with the new employer. Unlike the H-1B, the E-3 doesn't have a portability provision, so you can't begin work at the new studio while the application is processing. Plan for a gap between offer acceptance and start date to allow time for the new filing and a consulate appointment.
