Interior Designer roles qualify for E-3 visa sponsorship when the position requires a bachelor's degree in interior design or a related field. Australian designers can secure two-year renewable status with no lottery and no annual cap, making it straightforward to negotiate sponsorship with U.S. firms actively hiring for studio and commercial projects.

Translate your Australian credentials for U.S. employers
A three-year Australian bachelor's in interior design satisfies the E-3 visa degree requirement, but your portfolio and credentials need U.S. framing. Highlight any NCIDQ exam eligibility or CIDA-accredited coursework, since U.S. hiring managers use those markers to assess qualification.
Target firms with active commercial project pipelines
Architecture and commercial interior firms staffing large fitout, hospitality, or healthcare projects are most willing to sponsor E-3 visas because specialised hiring needs outweigh the paperwork burden. Search for studios with active DOL Labor Condition Applications filed under interior design SOC codes.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers fast
Migrate Mate surfaces Interior Designer roles from employers who have demonstrated willingness to sponsor E-3 visas, so you're not cold-applying to firms unfamiliar with the process. Filter by role and location to prioritise interviews that are most likely to convert.
Frame sponsorship as a low-burden ask for employers
Unlike H-1B visa, the E-3 requires no lottery registration and no PERM labour market test. When raising sponsorship in interviews, clarify that the employer's main obligation is filing a Labor Condition Application with the DOL and providing a job offer letter.
Get your offer letter scope right before the consulate
The consular officer will scrutinise whether your offered role genuinely requires a specialised degree. Ensure your offer letter describes responsibilities tied to design theory, building codes, or technical specification work rather than generic styling or decoration tasks.
File the LCA and visa paperwork before resigning in Australia
The E-3 is consular-processed, meaning you attend your visa interview in Australia before starting work in the U.S. Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork so the timeline between offer acceptance and interview booking stays as short as possible.
E-3 Visa Interior Designer: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Interior Designer jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to search for Interior Designer roles from employers open to E-3 sponsorship. Beyond that, target architecture and commercial design firms with active U.S. project pipelines, since those studios have the most immediate need for specialised hiring and are most familiar with the E-3 process.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does an Interior Designer role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
Yes, provided the position genuinely requires a bachelor's degree or higher in interior design or a closely related field. Roles focused on space planning, technical documentation, code compliance, or construction administration typically satisfy this standard. Positions described primarily as decorating, styling, or merchandising may not qualify, so the job offer letter's language matters significantly.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Interior Designers?
The E-3 has no annual lottery and no cap in practice, since the 10,500 annual allocation for Australian nationals has never been fully used. H-1B petitions enter a random lottery with roughly a one-in-four selection rate and can only be filed once per year. For Australian designers, the E-3 is a predictable, repeatable path that H-1B simply is not.
Can I switch employers or firms while on an E-3 as a designer?
Yes, but each new employer must file a fresh Labor Condition Application with the DOL and provide a new job offer letter before you start work with them. You don't need to leave the U.S. to change employers if you're already in valid E-3 status, though some applicants choose to renew at an Australian consulate at the same time to reset their visa stamp validity.
