Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as a Software Design Engineer
Verify your degree aligns with the role
The E-3 visa requires your degree field to match the Software Design Engineer position. A computer science or software engineering degree is straightforward; an unrelated degree needs supporting evidence that your coursework directly qualifies you for the specific role.
Target employers with LCA filing history
Search DOL's OFLC disclosure data for companies that have filed Labor Condition Applications for software engineering roles. Employers already familiar with the LCA process move faster and are less likely to stall on E-3 sponsorship paperwork after an offer.
Find E-3 software jobs on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate lists Software Design Engineer roles at U.S. employers open to E-3 sponsorship. Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork once you have an offer, so the process doesn't fall on your employer alone.
Get your credentials assessed before applying
Australian three-year bachelor's degrees are generally accepted as equivalent to U.S. four-year degrees for E-3 purposes, but having a credential evaluation ready removes any uncertainty during the offer stage, especially with U.S. employers less familiar with the Australian education system.
Negotiate the LCA timeline into your start date
DOL certifies most LCAs within seven business days, but your employer needs to file before you can book your consulate appointment. Build at least two weeks of LCA processing buffer into your agreed start date to avoid rescheduling your visa interview.
Prepare for nonimmigrant intent at the consulate
E-3 is a nonimmigrant visa, so consular officers will ask about your ties to Australia and your intent to return. Have clear answers about your circumstances, since the E-3 does not confer dual intent the way an H-1B visa does.
E-3 Visa Software Design Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Software Design Engineer jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Australian professionals searching for U.S. roles open to E-3 sponsorship. You can filter Software Design Engineer positions by employers already familiar with the E-3 process, which cuts out the back-and-forth of explaining the visa to hiring managers who have never heard of it.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Software Design Engineer role qualify as an E-3 specialty occupation?
Yes. Software Design Engineer positions consistently meet the specialty occupation standard because they require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a directly related field. The key is that the job description itself must require the degree, not just prefer it. A role listed as 'bachelor's preferred' rather than 'required' can create problems at the LCA or consulate stage.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Software Design Engineer roles?
The E-3 has no annual cap and no lottery, so you can apply any time of year and start as soon as your visa is approved. The H-1B cap is 85,000 per year and requires winning a lottery in April for an October start. For Australian software engineers, the E-3 is a direct path that doesn't depend on lottery selection.
Can I switch employers on an E-3 as a Software Design Engineer?
Yes, but you need to restart the process with each new employer. Your new employer files a fresh LCA with DOL, and you'll need a new E-3 visa stamp reflecting the new role and employer before you can work for them. You can't transfer an E-3 the way an H-1B holder can port a petition, so plan for a four-to-six-week gap between offer acceptance and your start date.
