Verify your degree supports specialty occupation
Australian three-year bachelor's degrees in English, communications, linguistics, or technical writing are generally accepted as equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree. Gather your transcripts and a credential evaluation before you apply, since consular officers assess the degree-to-role match directly.
Target employers with structured documentation teams
Software, medical devices, defense contracting, and regulated industries employ in-house Technical Editors with formal job descriptions that cite degree requirements. These roles are more defensible as specialty occupations than broad content or copyediting positions at smaller agencies.
Push for a job description that names your degree field
The E-3 visa requires the role to be a specialty occupation, meaning the employer's job description must state that a degree in a specific field is required. A posting that says 'bachelor's preferred' rather than 'required' can create problems at the consulate, so work with your employer to tighten the language before the LCA is filed.
Confirm your employer understands the LCA process
Before accepting an offer, ask whether the employer has filed a Labor Condition Application with the DOL before. Many mid-size publishers and tech firms haven't sponsored E-3s and may not know the LCA is the employer's responsibility. Addressing this early prevents delays after you've resigned your Australian role.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for end-to-end paperwork
Once you have a signed offer letter, use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA submission to the DOL, the DS-160, and your consulate preparation. This is especially useful when your employer's HR team has no prior E-3 experience.
Book your consulate appointment after LCA certification, not before
The DOL certifies most LCAs within seven business days, but you can't schedule your visa interview until that certification is in hand. Booking the consulate appointment at Sydney, Melbourne, or Perth before certification is confirmed wastes appointment slots and can compress your start date.
E-3 Visa Technical Editor: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Technical Editor jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Search Migrate Mate to filter Technical Editor openings by employers who have a history of E-3 or work visa sponsorship. Most generic job boards don't surface sponsorship willingness, so you end up cold-applying to roles where the employer has never heard of the E-3. Migrate Mate surfaces roles where sponsorship is already part of the hiring context, which shortens the conversation significantly.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Technical Editor role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
Yes, provided the employer's job description requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field such as English, technical writing, communications, or a related discipline. The key is that the degree must be a stated requirement, not a preference. Roles that accept any bachelor's degree, regardless of field, are harder to defend at the consulate as a specialty occupation.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Technical Editor roles?
The E-3 is available exclusively to Australian citizens and has no annual lottery, so you can apply any time you have a qualifying offer. The H-1B visa is capped at 85,000 per year and selected by lottery, meaning most applicants must wait for the annual registration window and may not be selected at all. For Australians, the E-3 is the straightforward option and the H-1B is effectively irrelevant unless your employer has a specific reason to pursue it.
Can I change Technical Editor employers while on an E-3?
Yes, but each new employer must file a fresh LCA and you'll need to obtain a new E-3 visa stamp before re-entering the U.S. on the new employer's authorization, or in some cases you can begin working after the new LCA is certified if you're already in status. There's no portability provision like the one that exists for H-1B holders under AC21, so the timing of the transition matters.
