Environmental Attorney Jobs in Maryland: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a environmental attorney in Maryland?
Becoming an environmental attorney in Maryland requires earning a Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school and passing the Maryland Bar Examination administered by the Maryland State Board of Law Examiners. After passing the bar, candidates are admitted by the Maryland Court of Appeals. Attorneys licensed in other states may seek admission on motion if they meet Maryland's practice experience requirements. Coursework or a certificate in environmental or administrative law strengthens a candidate's profile considerably.
Which companies hire environmental attorneys in Maryland?
Employers hiring environmental attorneys in Maryland right now include Healthcare Services, Baltimore County, MD, and AECOM, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Maryland's combination of federal agency headquarters, regulated industries along the Chesapeake Bay corridor, and a robust private bar makes it one of the more active states for environmental law hiring.
Which Maryland cities have the most environmental attorney jobs?
Baltimore, Towson, and Bethesda account for the largest share of environmental attorney openings in Maryland. Baltimore drives demand through its concentration of law firms, corporate legal departments, and proximity to state agencies, while Annapolis generates consistent openings because of its role as the seat of Maryland state government and the Maryland Department of the Environment, and the D.C. suburbs attract federal contractor and agency work tied to EPA and DOJ regional offices.
Are there remote environmental attorney jobs in Maryland?
Yes, but they are less common than in purely transactional legal fields, since environmental attorneys frequently attend agency hearings, conduct site visits, and appear in Maryland courts. About 29% of environmental attorney openings tied to Maryland are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, with remote work most prevalent in legal research, compliance advisory, and policy-focused roles that do not require regular in-person appearances.
How can I get hired as a environmental attorney in Maryland with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing a judicial clerkship with a Maryland circuit court or the Court of Special Appeals, which is highly valued by both law firms and government employers in the state. The Maryland Office of the Attorney General and the Maryland Department of the Environment run associate and entry-level attorney positions that welcome recent graduates with environmental law coursework. Lateral moves from paralegal, environmental consultant, or policy analyst roles at Maryland agencies also open doors, as does completing a clinic at a law school with an environmental law program.
Where can I find and apply to environmental attorney jobs in Maryland?
You can find and apply to environmental attorney jobs in Maryland on Migrate Mate, which lists current Maryland openings across law firms, government agencies, and corporate legal departments. Search the available roles, find the ones that fit your experience and practice area, and apply directly to each employer through the listing.
