Role Description - The Compliance Specialist is an on-site role based in Gaithersburg, MD, responsible for supporting regulatory and policy compliance across NEA Member Benefits programs and operations. In this role, the individual reviews contracts, marketing materials, and member communications to ensure alignment with applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies. Typical day-to-day tasks include monitoring regulatory changes, maintaining compliance documentation, assisting with audits, and supporting internal training on compliance standards. The Compliance Specialist works closely with legal, product, marketing, and operations teams to identify potential risks, recommend corrective actions, and help implement best practices. The role also involves preparing reports, tracking compliance metrics, and contributing to continuous improvement of compliance processes.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of regulatory compliance practices, risk management principles, and internal control frameworks, preferably within financial services, membership organizations, or nonprofit environments.
• Strong analytical, research, and critical-thinking skills to interpret regulations, assess impacts, and develop practical recommendations.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to draft clear policy documents, summarize complex information, and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
• High attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines while maintaining accuracy and confidentiality.
• Proficiency with standard office productivity tools (e.g., MS Office Suite) and comfort working with databases, tracking systems, and documentation repositories.
• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Business, Finance, Legal Studies, Public Policy, or a related discipline; compliance certifications (e.g., CCEP, CRCM, or similar) are a plus.
• 5 years of experience in a compliance, audit, legal, or regulatory support role is preferred, along with a demonstrated commitment to ethical standards and member-focused service.

Key Responsibilities

• Coordinate and maintain compliance calendars, filings, documentation, and records across regulatory, HR, benefits, insurance, privacy, governance, contract, and vendor compliance areas.
• Support SEC/RIA, ERISA, state insurance, MEWA, employment, privacy, and corporate compliance obligations, including preparing or coordinating recurring filings and related documentation. Prior experience in all of these areas is not required; the successful candidate should have the ability and interest to learn new regulatory areas.
• Partner with Legal, Human Resources, Finance, Marketing, vendors, and external partners to track compliance obligations, monitor deadlines, and support timely completion of required activities.
• Assist with contract and vendor compliance by tracking key obligations, supporting standard agreements, monitoring deliverables, and coordinating issue resolution.
• Support privacy, data request, marketing compliance, trademark, sweepstakes, and document retention processes.
• Help maintain governance records, corporate registrations, compliance policies, audit materials, and documentation needed for regulatory examinations or internal reviews.
• Monitor regulatory developments, support risk assessments, track remediation items, and contribute to the ongoing development of NEA Member Benefits’ compliance program.
• Handle confidential, sensitive, and privileged information with sound judgment and discretion.
