Environmental Attorney Jobs in Pennsylvania: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a environmental attorney in Pennsylvania?
To become an environmental attorney in Pennsylvania, you must earn a Juris Doctor from an accredited law school, pass the Pennsylvania Bar Examination, and be admitted to the bar by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court through the Pennsylvania Board of Law Examiners. Most candidates then pursue positions at law firms, corporations, or the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, where environmental law concentrations in school or clinical experience with land use and regulatory matters provides a meaningful advantage.
Which companies hire environmental attorneys in Pennsylvania?
Employers hiring environmental attorneys in Pennsylvania right now include Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Langan Engineering and Environmental Services, and Penn Medicine, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Pennsylvania's concentration of energy companies, petrochemical facilities, and large manufacturing operations means in-house counsel roles alongside law firm and state agency positions are a consistent part of the market.
Which Pennsylvania cities have the most environmental attorney jobs?
Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Harrisburg account for the most environmental attorney openings in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia drives the largest share through its concentration of AmLaw firms, corporate headquarters, and proximity to federal courts, while Pittsburgh's industrial and energy history sustains steady demand, and Harrisburg's role as the state capital generates openings within the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and related regulatory bodies.
Are there remote environmental attorney jobs in Pennsylvania?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely transactional legal fields because environmental work often requires site visits, in-person agency appearances, and courtroom presence. About 36% of environmental attorney openings tied to Pennsylvania are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and the positions most likely to offer that flexibility are transactional compliance, due diligence review, and regulatory research roles that do not require regular field or courtroom work.
How can I get hired as a environmental attorney in Pennsylvania with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a summer associate or law clerk position with a Pennsylvania firm that has an active environmental or energy practice, followed by a full-time associate offer. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General both hire entry-level attorneys into environmental and natural resources units. Candidates with law school coursework in environmental law, a clinic placement involving permitting or CERCLA matters, or a note published on environmental topics in a law review hold a clear edge over those without that background.
Where can I find and apply to environmental attorney jobs in Pennsylvania?
You can find and apply to environmental attorney jobs in Pennsylvania on Migrate Mate, which lists current Pennsylvania openings from employers across the state. Search the listings for roles that match your experience level and practice area, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
