Family Physician Jobs in Michigan: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a family physician in Michigan?
To become a family physician in Michigan, you must earn a medical degree from an accredited institution, complete a three-year family medicine residency, and obtain a license from the Michigan Board of Medicine through the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. Passing the USMLE or COMLEX exam series is required for licensure. Board certification through the American Board of Family Medicine, while not always mandated by the state, is required by most Michigan health systems before a physician can see patients independently.
How much do family physicians make in Michigan?
Family physicians in Michigan earn a median of about $214,070 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $65,320 for the lowest 10% to over $382,240 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire family physicians in Michigan?
Employers hiring family physicians in Michigan right now include Henry Ford Health, Corewell Health, and Beacon Health System, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Michigan's integrated health systems and federally qualified health centers tend to hire continuously given the state's ongoing primary care physician shortage, especially in rural and underserved communities.
Which Michigan cities have the most family physician jobs?
The cities with the most family physician openings in Michigan are Flint, Detroit, and Holland. Detroit anchors the highest volume of postings due to the concentration of large health systems and academic medical centers, while Grand Rapids and Lansing generate steady demand through regional hospital networks and community health organizations serving both urban and surrounding rural populations.
Are there remote family physician jobs in Michigan?
Yes, but they're rare. About 13% of family physician openings tied to Michigan are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of primary care practice. The portions of the role most compatible with remote work are telemedicine follow-up visits, chronic disease management consultations, and behavioral health-integrated care sessions offered through Michigan health systems that have expanded virtual care programs.
How can I get hired as a family physician in Michigan with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing your family medicine residency at a Michigan program, such as those affiliated with Michigan Medicine, Henry Ford Health, or Spectrum Health, and applying directly to those systems for staff physician roles upon graduation. Large Michigan health systems and federally qualified health centers regularly hire new attendings into mentored first-year positions. Candidates who hold a Michigan medical license, have completed board certification, and have clinical experience in underserved or rural settings gain a distinct edge, particularly for positions at community health centers across the Upper Peninsula and mid-Michigan.
Where can I find and apply to family physician jobs in Michigan?
You can find and apply to family physician jobs in Michigan on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the state. Search the listings for roles that match your specialty, preferred location, and practice setting, then apply directly to the positions that fit.
