Family Practitioner Jobs in Maine: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a family practitioner in Maine?
To become a family practitioner in Maine, you must complete a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, finish an accredited family medicine residency, and obtain a Maine medical license through the Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine. The board requires proof of postgraduate training, passage of USMLE or COMLEX exams, and a background check. Board certification in family medicine, while not always legally required, is expected by most Maine health systems and community health centers.
How much do family practitioners make in Maine?
Family practitioners in Maine earn a median of about $239,870 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $163,850 for the lowest 10% to over $290,450 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire family practitioners in Maine?
Companies currently hiring family practitioners in Maine include ConvenientMD, MaineHealth, and Empower Psychological Services, PLLC, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Maine's hiring is especially active among integrated health systems and federally qualified health centers serving rural and underserved communities.
Which Maine cities have the most family practitioner jobs?
Bangor, Augusta, and Waterville have the most family practitioner openings in Maine. Portland drives volume as the state's largest city with the broadest concentration of MaineHealth and affiliated outpatient practices, while Bangor and Augusta reflect the strong presence of Northern Light Health and Central Maine Healthcare, both of which maintain large primary care networks extending into surrounding rural counties.
Are there remote family practitioner jobs in Maine?
Yes, but they're rare. Family practitioners are hands-on clinicians who conduct physical exams and in-person patient care, so the role is not broadly suited to fully remote work. About 33% of family practitioner openings tied to Maine are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those positions are most often telehealth roles focused on medication management, chronic disease follow-up, or behavioral health integration.
How can I get hired as a family practitioner in Maine with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly for residency-to-hire programs that large Maine health systems post for physicians finishing training. MaineHealth and Northern Light Health both recruit new residency graduates into employed primary care positions and sometimes offer loan repayment in exchange for service in rural or underserved panels. Candidates without independent experience can also target federally qualified health centers in Maine, where National Health Service Corps loan repayment incentives attract new physicians. Holding an active Maine medical license and ABFM board eligibility at the time of application gives candidates a clear edge.
Where can I find and apply to family practitioner jobs in Maine?
You can find and apply to family practitioner jobs in Maine on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to Maine employers and health systems. Search the listings to find roles that match your specialty, training level, and preferred location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
