Job Title: Forward Deployed AI Engineer - Lead
Location: Remote
Work Type: Full Time
Job Description:
As a Forward Deployed AI Engineer (FDE) for our Data and AI business, you will operate at the front lines of the AI revolution, and act as an elite technical bridge between our core research breakthroughs and our most strategic customers. Unlike traditional software engineers, you are embedded directly within client environments to solve their hardest, highest-stakes problems by building and shipping production-grade Agentic AI systems. You operate with the autonomy of a founder, and the technical rigor of a staff engineer to turn messy, real-world data into measurable business value. This is a Senior IC role with leadership scope. You will own the entire lifecycle of AI deployment—from initial discovery and scoping to the development of full-stack systems and guiding the path to client integration. Your success is measured not just by the code you write, but by the client adoption and the workflow impact realized by the client. A pattern you build for one customer becomes an abstraction for many more.
Key Responsibilities
AI Deployment & Production Engineering:
- Lead the client technical engagement and the POD delivering it: Executive communication, reference architectures, alongside building POCs with teammates.
- Drive prototype to production system buildout through tight iteration and feedback cycles, ensure constant learning from evals and demos.
- Collaborate with the larger engineering team to build AI capabilities in the enterprise context.
- Optimize AI workflows for performance, low latency, and reliability under real-client constraints.
- Harden systems for security and compliance, ensuring models operate safely within regulated environments.
- Utilize advanced AI coding assistants or agentic development tools such as Claude Code and OpenAI Codex, regularly to meet client needs.
Embedded Problem-Solving & Feedback:
- Embed deeply with customer engineering teams to translate open-ended business challenges (e.g., "reduce fraud") into concrete technical solutions.
- Act as the primary technical owner, troubleshooting complex production issues and serving as the last line of defense in the field.
- Use feedback from the field: failure modes, eval results, latency profiles, and adoption patterns to drive roadmap inputs for the R&D teams.
- Codify successful field patterns into reusable tools and abstractions; actively contribute to the AI foundational platform within Altimetrik.
Who You Are
- A hands-on builder with a "radical ownership" mindset—you don't file tickets; you fix problems across the full stack.
- Comfortable with C-level dialogue and capable of translating complex AI systems into business language for non-technical executives.
- Industry veteran: 15+ years of hands-on AI / Data / Software engineering experience.
- Highly proficient in Python, SQL, and modern orchestration frameworks.
- Fluent in production work across at least one of the major LLM platforms: Anthropic, OpenAI, Google Gemini or AWS Bedrock.
- You’ve built agentic workflows, RAG systems, and custom data pipelines within an enterprise environment.
- Have shipped production systems on at least public cloud (AWS, Azure or GCP), navigated IAM, Data Services, Security and Network controls.
- Able to travel up to 30% of your time. Sustained on-site interaction is a key differentiator for the FDE role.
Preferred / Nice to have
- Hands-on experience building applications within a modern data platform: e.g. Snowflake, Databricks, Google BigQuery.
- Prior experience building production AI or data systems in a regulated vertical: BFSI, Payments, FinTech, or Life Sciences. Hands-on familiarity with relevant risk, compliance, and audit frameworks.
- Published writing or open-source contributions in the agentic AI or data engineering space.

Tips for Your Forward Deployed Engineering Job Search
Quantify customer impact on your resume
Forward deployed engineers are hired for outcomes, not just technical skills. Replace vague descriptions with concrete results: how many enterprise accounts you supported, how fast you reduced deployment friction, or how much implementation time you cut.
Highlight client-facing technical communication
Hiring managers screen for engineers who can explain complex systems to non-technical stakeholders. Add examples to your resume where you translated architecture decisions or debugging processes into plain language for customers or executives.
Target companies deploying new product lines
Forward deployed roles spike at companies launching into new verticals or scaling onboarding. Filter openings by companies that recently raised funding or announced enterprise expansions, since those teams are staffing up deployment capacity first.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists forward deployed engineering openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare a deployment war story for interviews
Interviewers almost always ask for a specific example of a difficult customer deployment you owned end to end. Prepare one story that covers the technical problem, how you communicated with the customer under pressure, and how you resolved it.
Negotiate scope before accepting an offer
Ask what the ratio of proactive customer work to reactive firefighting looks like before you sign. Forward deployed roles vary significantly in how much time you spend on new deployments versus troubleshooting existing accounts, and that gap affects day-to-day satisfaction.
Forward Deployed Engineering Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most forward deployed engineers?
The companies hiring the most forward deployed engineers right now include Databricks, Deloitte, and Palantir Technologies, with the largest share of openings in California, New York, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Enterprise software, AI infrastructure, and defense technology companies consistently post the highest volume of these roles.
How many forward deployed engineering jobs are remote?
About 48% of forward deployed engineering openings are fully remote or hybrid as of August 2026, though a significant portion require travel to customer sites. Roles focused on technical account management and post-sale integration tend to offer the most remote flexibility, while deployment-heavy positions often require on-site presence during critical implementation phases.
How do you become a forward deployed engineer?
Start by building a foundation in software engineering or systems administration, then move into a customer-facing role such as solutions engineering or technical support. Develop the ability to run deployments independently, communicate architectural trade-offs to non-engineers, and own customer outcomes end to end. A portfolio of successful enterprise implementations carries more weight than any single credential.
Can you get hired as a forward deployed engineer with little experience?
Yes, but you need to show customer-facing problem-solving rather than just coding ability. Roles labeled associate or junior forward deployed engineer exist at companies scaling their deployment teams. Highlight any experience managing external stakeholders, leading technical onboarding, or troubleshooting production issues under pressure, even from internships, support roles, or freelance projects.
What does the forward deployed engineering interview process look like?
Most hiring processes include a recruiter screen, a technical assessment covering APIs or scripting, a system design or architecture discussion, and a customer scenario round where you walk through how you would handle a difficult deployment. Final rounds often involve a panel with both engineering and customer success stakeholders who evaluate your communication style alongside your technical depth.
Where can I find and apply to forward deployed engineering jobs?
You can find and apply to forward deployed engineering jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience and location preferences, then apply directly to each one that fits.
