- Experience with physical access control systems, CCTV, and alarm monitoring platforms
- Relevant certification such as CPP, PSP, CompTIA Security+, or CISSP
- Knowledge of NIST, OSHA, or industry-specific security compliance frameworks

Tips for Your Security Specialist Job Search
Tailor your resume to clearance levels
Many security specialist postings specify a required clearance tier, from Public Trust to Top Secret/SCI. Call out your current clearance status and any polygraph history in a dedicated summary line so hiring managers don't have to hunt for it.
Stack certifications before you apply
Postings for mid-level roles almost always list CPP, PSP, or CompTIA Security+ as preferred or required. Earning even one before you apply moves your resume past the initial screen that filters out uncertified candidates.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists security specialist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Quantify your incident response outcomes
Instead of listing duties, describe what changed because of your work. Reduced unauthorized access incidents, cut investigation cycle time, or improved badge compliance across a multi-site facility all communicate impact in language security hiring managers respond to.
Research the sector before your interview
Physical security at a hospital operates under different constraints than at a data center or federal building. Walk into every interview knowing the regulatory environment, threat profile, and compliance frameworks specific to that employer's sector.
Follow up with a written debrief note
After a panel interview, send a brief note that references one specific scenario discussed and connects your experience to it directly. This signals situational awareness, reinforces your technical fit, and differentiates you from candidates who send only a generic thank-you.
Security Specialist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most security specialists?
The companies hiring the most security specialists right now include Target, The Home Depot, and Convergint, with the largest share of openings in Texas, California, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Defense contractors, federal agencies, and large healthcare networks consistently account for the highest volume of postings.
How many security specialist jobs are remote?
About 15% of security specialist openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with remote options concentrated in cybersecurity and information security sub-specialties. Physical security and site protection roles are almost always on-site, while policy, compliance, and security operations center analyst positions are most likely to offer flexible arrangements.
How do you become a security specialist?
Start by completing a degree or certificate program in criminal justice, information security, or security management, then pursue an entry-level role in loss prevention, law enforcement, or IT support to build foundational experience. Earn a recognized certification such as CompTIA Security+ or CPP to clear screening filters, and progressively take on assignments that involve risk assessment, incident response, or access control administration to qualify for specialist-level postings.
Can I get hired as a security specialist without much experience?
Yes, entry-level security specialist roles exist specifically for candidates coming from military service, campus security, retail loss prevention, or help desk backgrounds. Employers hiring at this level prioritize a clean background check, a relevant certification, and demonstrated reliability over years of direct experience. Framing prior work in terms of observation, reporting, and protocol adherence helps bridge any experience gap on your resume.
What does the security specialist interview process look like?
Most security specialist interviews involve an initial HR screen focused on background and availability, followed by a technical or behavioral panel with a security manager or director. Candidates are typically asked to walk through a past incident response, describe how they handled a policy violation, or explain their familiarity with specific access control platforms. Roles requiring a clearance add a separate adjudication stage that runs independently of the hiring decision.
Where can I find and apply to security specialist jobs?
You can find and apply to security specialist jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your background and clearance level, then apply directly to each one that fits.
