General Manager Jobs in Iowa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a general manager in Iowa?
Most general managers in Iowa reach the role by combining a bachelor's degree in business, operations, or a related field with progressively responsible leadership experience in their target industry. Iowa does not require a state-issued license specifically for the general manager title, but roles in food service operations may require an Iowa Food Manager Certification, and certain industries such as healthcare or financial services have their own regulatory requirements. Building experience as a department head, operations supervisor, or assistant manager at Iowa employers in manufacturing, retail, or distribution is the most common path.
How much do general managers make in Iowa?
General managers in Iowa earn a median of about $87,690 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $42,850 for the lowest 10% to over $191,990 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire general managers in Iowa?
Companies currently hiring general managers in Iowa include Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, Eurest, and U-Haul, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Iowa's base of food manufacturing, agricultural services, regional retail chains, and healthcare networks makes it a consistent market for general manager hiring across multiple sectors.
Which Iowa cities have the most general manager jobs?
Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and Grimes have the most general manager openings in Iowa. Des Moines drives volume as the state's commercial and corporate hub, supporting roles across financial services, healthcare, and multi-unit retail, while Cedar Rapids and Davenport add significant demand through food processing, logistics, and manufacturing operations concentrated along the I-380 and Quad Cities corridors.
Are there remote general manager jobs in Iowa?
Yes, but they're rare. General manager roles are inherently operational and on-site by nature, requiring direct oversight of staff, facilities, and day-to-day functions. About 0% of general manager openings tied to Iowa are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those tend to be regional or district-level positions where travel substitutes for a fixed location rather than fully office-free roles.
How can I get hired as a general manager in Iowa with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is to start in a department lead, shift supervisor, or assistant manager role at an Iowa employer in retail, food service, or distribution, then build toward a general manager title over two to four years. Hy-Vee and Tyson Foods both run structured internal development tracks that advance high-performing supervisors into facility or store management. Earning an Iowa Food Manager Certification strengthens applications in food and beverage operations, and completing a business or operations certificate through Iowa State University Extension can make candidates more competitive when formal degree experience is limited.
Where can I find and apply to general manager jobs in Iowa?
