General Manager Jobs in Michigan: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a general manager in Michigan?
Most general manager roles in Michigan require a bachelor's degree in business administration, management, or a related field, though some employers in manufacturing and retail promote from within based on experience. Michigan does not issue a state-specific license for general managers. Candidates typically build a path through supervisory or department manager roles, developing P&L accountability and team leadership experience in industries like automotive, retail, or healthcare before advancing to a general manager position.
How much do general managers make in Michigan?
General managers in Michigan earn a median of about $99,530 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $49,380 for the lowest 10% to over $222,810 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire general managers in Michigan?
Employers hiring general managers in Michigan right now include Bob Evans Restaurants, Domino's, and Taco Bell, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Michigan's deep roots in automotive manufacturing, large retail chains, and regional healthcare systems mean general manager demand is spread across a wide range of industries and company sizes.
Which Michigan cities have the most general manager jobs?
Grand Rapids, Holland, and Ann Arbor have the most general manager openings in Michigan. Detroit leads because of its concentration of automotive headquarters, large retail corridors, and hospital networks, while Grand Rapids draws significant demand from its manufacturing base and growing food and beverage sector, and Ann Arbor reflects strong healthcare and university-adjacent operations hiring.
Are there remote general manager jobs in Michigan?
Yes, but they're rare. General manager roles are inherently operational and typically require on-site presence to lead teams and oversee day-to-day activities. About 0% of general manager openings tied to Michigan are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those tend to be in regional or district oversight roles where travel substitutes for a fixed office rather than fully on-site management.
How can I get hired as a general manager in Michigan with little or no experience?
The most realistic path is starting as a shift supervisor, department manager, or assistant manager, then building toward a general manager title over time. Large Michigan employers like Meijer and Henry Ford Health run internal leadership development programs that move high-performing associates into management tracks. Entry roles in retail operations, food service, or manufacturing team leadership are the most common on-ramps. Completing a business degree through a Michigan institution like Michigan State University, Western Michigan University, or a community college strengthens a candidate's profile considerably.
