Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Green Card Sponsorship as a Field Application Engineer
Document your specialty occupation evidence early
Gather transcripts, employer letters, and project records that connect your electrical, mechanical, or systems engineering degree to FAE duties. PERM audits frequently target roles where the degree-to-job link isn't spelled out explicitly in your file.
Target companies with active PERM filing history
Prioritize employers in semiconductors, industrial automation, and test-and-measurement who have filed PERM applications for engineering roles before. Past filings signal an established process and dedicated HR resources for green card cases.
Search sponsoring FAE roles on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Field Application Engineer postings by employers with green card sponsorship history. Searching this way cuts out roles where sponsorship is listed as possible but rarely executed.
Clarify EB-2 versus EB-3 classification with your offer
FAE roles requiring a master's degree or documented specialized expertise often qualify for EB-2, shortening wait times for many nationalities. Ask the hiring team which category their PERM attorney intends to file under before accepting an offer.
Understand the prevailing wage before salary negotiations
Your employer must certify your wage meets DOL prevailing wage levels for your specific FAE job duties and worksite location. Look up your wage tier using the OFLC Wage Search before negotiating so you understand the floor the employer must meet.
Prepare for the PERM recruitment documentation window
PERM requires your employer to run a documented recruitment campaign showing no qualified U.S. workers are available. This process typically takes six to twelve months before DOL certifies the application, so factor that timeline into your job-change planning.
Green Card Field Application Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Field Application Engineer role typically qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship?
It depends on the employer's job requirements. If the posting requires a master's degree or equivalent specialized expertise, the role can qualify for EB-2. If a bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, or systems engineering is the stated minimum, EB-3 is the more common filing category. Your employer's immigration attorney makes the final determination based on the actual duties and minimum requirements documented in the PERM application.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for FAE roles?
H-1B visa grants temporary work authorization and is subject to the annual lottery, capping new petitions each fiscal year. PERM-based green card sponsorship has no annual lottery and leads to permanent residency. The tradeoff is timeline: PERM labor certification alone can take six to eighteen months before the I-140 petition is even filed, whereas an approved H-1B petition starts your work authorization much faster.
Which industries sponsor FAEs for green cards most frequently?
Semiconductor manufacturers, industrial automation companies, and test-and-measurement equipment firms are the most consistent sponsors for Field Application Engineer roles. These companies depend on engineers with deep product knowledge who can support long sales and integration cycles, making them more likely to invest in permanent sponsorship rather than cycling through temporary visa renewals.
How can I find Field Application Engineer jobs that include green card sponsorship?
Use Migrate Mate to filter FAE postings by employers with a documented green card sponsorship history. Many job postings mention sponsorship availability without distinguishing between H-1B and PERM, so searching through a platform that surfaces employers who have actually filed PERM applications saves significant time screening roles that won't lead to permanent residency.
Can I switch FAE employers after my PERM is filed but before I get my green card?
You can change employers, but the PERM certification and I-140 petition are tied to your sponsoring employer. If you leave before the I-140 is approved, you generally have to restart the PERM process with the new company. Once your I-140 has been approved for 180 days and you're in adjustment of status, AC21 portability may allow you to move to a same-or-similar role without losing your priority date.
