Green Card Graduate Jobs
Graduate roles across research, engineering, and policy attract strong EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship from U.S. employers running the full PERM labor certification process. Your advanced degree or specialized training is the credential that drives eligibility, and permanent residency is the destination, not a temporary work authorization.

Align your degree to PERM job requirements
PERM requires the employer to define a minimum qualification that matches your credentials. If your graduate degree is in a closely related but not identical field, document how your coursework and thesis work map to the specific role requirements before any filing begins.
Target employers with active EB-2 filing history
Research companies that have filed I-140 petitions under EB-2 for graduate-level roles. Employers already familiar with advanced-degree sponsorship move faster and make fewer errors during the PERM audit stage, which directly shortens your path to permanent residency.
Verify your role qualifies under EB-2 or EB-3
Use O*NET to confirm your graduate job title's standard educational requirements. Roles where a bachelor's degree is the industry norm typically fall under EB-3 professionals, while positions requiring a master's or above qualify for EB-2, which generally carries shorter priority date backlogs for many nationalities.
Search green-card-sponsoring employers through Migrate Mate
Filter your job search by employers with documented PERM and I-140 filing activity. Migrate Mate surfaces graduate roles where employers have an established employment-based sponsorship track record, so you're not discovering late in negotiations that sponsorship isn't available.
Clarify sponsorship timing before accepting an offer
PERM requires employers to test the labor market before filing, which typically adds several months to the process. Confirm with the hiring manager whether the company initiates PERM immediately after your start date or waits for a performance review cycle to complete.
Request a prevailing wage check for your location
DOL's prevailing wage determination sets the minimum salary the employer must pay throughout the PERM and green card process. Cross-check your offered salary against the OFLC Wage Search for your specific job title and metro area before signing your offer letter.
Green Card Graduate: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Graduate roles commonly qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Both categories are available depending on the role's defined educational requirements. Positions that formally require a master's degree or higher qualify for EB-2. Roles where a bachelor's degree is the stated minimum fall under EB-3 professionals. Your employer's PERM job description, not your personal credentials, determines which category applies.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for Graduate positions?
H-1B visa is a temporary status capped at 65,000 registrations per year and subject to a lottery. EB-3 and EB-2 green card sponsorship through PERM has no annual cap at the petition level and leads directly to permanent residency. The trade-off is timeline: PERM labor certification and I-140 adjudication typically take one to three years before a priority date becomes current, depending on your country of birth.
Where can I find Graduate jobs where employers are already set up for green card sponsorship?
Migrate Mate indexes Graduate roles from employers with verified PERM and I-140 filing history, so you can filter by sponsorship type before applying. This avoids the common situation where candidates reach final-round interviews only to learn the employer has never run a PERM process and isn't willing to start one.
Can my employer start the PERM process before I have permanent status?
Yes. Employers can file a PERM application while you're working on any valid status, including H-1B, OPT, or even a recently approved change of status. USCIS allows concurrent I-485 adjustment of status filing once a visa number is available, so in some cases you can pursue both tracks simultaneously without interrupting employment.
What happens to my green card case if I change Graduate employers mid-process?
Portability rules under AC21 allow you to transfer an approved I-140 to a new employer in the same or a similar occupational classification after your I-485 has been pending for at least 180 days. Before that threshold, leaving the sponsoring employer generally means restarting the PERM process with your new company. Confirm the job title overlap carefully with your new employer before making a move.
