Document every equipment certification you hold
PERM job descriptions are written around the minimum requirements for the role. Certifications in HVAC, electrical systems, or boiler operation that match those requirements strengthen your I-140 and reduce RFE risk during USCIS adjudication.
Target employers in facilities-dense industries first
Hospitals, universities, manufacturing plants, and property management firms run large maintenance departments and file PERM applications regularly. These employers already have immigration counsel and established sponsorship workflows, which shortens your path from offer to petition.
Use Migrate Mate to filter sponsoring employers by role
Search Migrate Mate for Maintenance Specialist positions filtered by green card sponsorship history. You'll see which employers have filed PERM applications for this specific job title, so you're targeting companies with a demonstrated track record rather than guessing.
Verify your wage level matches the PERM posting
Run your target metro area through the OFLC Wage Search before you negotiate an offer. PERM requires the employer to pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your occupation and location, and a salary below that level will stall the labor certification.
Ask employers about their O*NET job code before signing
Maintenance Specialist roles map to different O*NET codes depending on specialization, and the code shapes how DOL classifies the position in PERM. Confirm the employer's job description aligns with your actual duties before the labor certification is filed.
Understand the EB-3 priority date backlog for your country
EB-3 skilled worker sponsorship has no annual cap for the petition itself, but visa number availability depends on your country of birth. Check the monthly Visa Bulletin so you know your estimated wait from I-140 approval to adjustment of status eligibility.
Green Card Maintenance Specialist: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Maintenance Specialist jobs qualify for green card sponsorship?
Yes. Maintenance Specialist roles qualify for EB-3 skilled worker sponsorship when the position requires at least two years of training or experience. If the role requires an advanced technical degree, it may qualify under EB-2 instead. The employer must complete PERM labor certification with DOL before filing the I-140 immigrant petition with USCIS.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B for a Maintenance Specialist?
H-1B visa requires the role to qualify as a specialty occupation needing a bachelor's degree, which many Maintenance Specialist positions don't meet. PERM-based green card sponsorship through EB-3 covers skilled trades and experienced workers without that degree requirement. There's no lottery and no annual cap on PERM filings, though visa number backlogs may apply depending on your country of birth.
What does the PERM process look like for a Maintenance Specialist role?
The employer starts by obtaining a prevailing wage determination from DOL, then conducts a supervised recruitment campaign to show no qualified U.S. workers are available. Once DOL certifies the PERM application, the employer files the I-140 petition with USCIS. You can file for adjustment of status once a visa number is current, which leads to lawful permanent residency.
How do I find employers who sponsor Maintenance Specialists for green cards?
Migrate Mate lets you search for Maintenance Specialist jobs filtered specifically by green card sponsorship history, so you're seeing employers who have filed PERM applications for this occupation before. That's a more reliable signal than asking during an interview, and it saves time by focusing your search on companies with established immigration processes.
Can my trade certifications substitute for a four-year degree in the green card process?
Under EB-3 skilled worker sponsorship, a four-year degree isn't required. DOL evaluates the minimum requirements the employer sets in the PERM job description, which can be built around certifications, vocational training, and documented work experience. Your certifications in areas like HVAC, electrical systems, or industrial equipment can anchor the job requirements and support the I-140 filing.
