Orthopaedic Surgeon Green Card Jobs
Orthopaedic surgeons with foreign training can secure U.S. employment-based green card sponsorship through PERM labor certification, with most roles qualifying under EB-2 for advanced-degree professionals or EB-3 for skilled specialists. Hospital systems and academic medical centers regularly sponsor board-eligible candidates willing to commit to the multi-year permanent residency process.

Align your credentials before applying
ECFMG certification, USMCA reciprocity, and state medical board eligibility all factor into PERM-stage prevailing wage determinations. Confirm your foreign orthopaedic training maps to U.S. residency and fellowship equivalents before any employer submits your labor certification.
Search sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Filter by orthopaedic surgery roles with confirmed green card sponsorship history on Migrate Mate. Targeting employers who have completed prior PERM filings for surgeons reduces negotiation friction and accelerates your offer-to-filing timeline.
Verify prevailing wage before salary talks
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the DOL prevailing wage for your specific orthopaedic surgery title and the employer's county. Your offered salary must meet or exceed this level, or PERM certification will be denied regardless of offer terms.
Understand EB-2 versus EB-3 priority date impact
If you're from India or China, your EB-2 and EB-3 priority dates move on different tracks. Some surgeons from those countries strategically file under EB-3 when its cut-off date is more favorable, a decision worth confirming with your sponsoring employer's immigration counsel.

Find Orthopaedic Surgeon JobsOrthopaedic Surgeon Green Card Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Do orthopaedic surgeon roles typically qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Most orthopaedic surgeon positions qualify for EB-2 because the role requires a medical degree plus residency and fellowship training, meeting the advanced-degree threshold USCIS applies. EB-3 is also available for candidates whose credentials are classified as skilled workers. Your employer's immigration attorney will determine the correct category based on the job description filed with DOL during PERM.
How does PERM green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for orthopaedic surgeons?
H-1B is a temporary work status capped at six years without an approved I-140, subject to annual lottery selection, and tied to one employer. PERM-based green card sponsorship has no annual cap at the EB-3 level for most nationalities, leads to permanent residency, and lets you change employers after the I-140 is approved and your priority date is current. The tradeoff is a longer filing timeline, often two to four years from PERM filing to green card approval.
What PERM recruitment steps does a hospital need to complete before sponsoring an orthopaedic surgeon?
DOL requires the employer to conduct mandatory recruitment, including job postings in a Sunday newspaper, three additional recruitment steps such as professional journals or job fairs, and a 30-day job order placed with the State Workforce Agency. For professional roles like orthopaedic surgery, the employer must also post an internal notice. All recruitment must occur within 180 days before filing the ETA-9089 with DOL.
How can I find orthopaedic surgery jobs where the employer already sponsors green cards?
Searching broadly misses employers with active PERM filing history. Migrate Mate lets you filter orthopaedic surgeon roles by confirmed green card sponsorship, so you're targeting hospitals and health systems that have already navigated the PERM process for surgical staff. This significantly reduces time spent screening employers who lack the internal infrastructure to sponsor.
Can an orthopaedic surgeon change employers during the green card process without losing their priority date?
Yes, under AC21 portability, you can change to a same or similar orthopaedic surgery role after your I-140 has been approved for at least 180 days and your new position is in the same occupational classification. Your priority date is preserved. You'll need to notify USCIS with supporting documentation, and your new employer doesn't need to restart the PERM process from scratch.
