Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Green Card Sponsorship as a Professional Engineer
Get your PE license recognized early
State PE licensure is a hiring requirement for most civil, structural, and environmental roles. Confirm your foreign engineering credentials qualify for NCEES credential evaluation before applying, since PERM petitions often list licensure as a minimum requirement for the position.
Target employers with active PERM filings
Engineering firms that have filed PERM applications before are far more likely to sponsor again. Use Migrate Mate to filter Professional Engineer roles by green card sponsorship history so you're not starting the conversation from scratch.
Align your resume to the PERM job description
Your qualifications must match the minimum requirements stated in the employer's PERM application exactly. Listing experience that exceeds the stated requirements can trigger USCIS scrutiny, so coordinate with your employer's immigration counsel before finalizing the job description.
Verify prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
DOL sets the prevailing wage floor for your specific PE role and location using the OFLC Wage Search tool. Your offered salary must meet or exceed this level for the PERM application to be certified, so check it before you accept any offer.
Ask about concurrent filing eligibility at the offer stage
If your priority date becomes current, you may be able to file I-140 and I-485 simultaneously, cutting months off your wait. Confirm whether your employer's legal team handles concurrent filing before signing, since not all firms manage this proactively.

Find Professional Engineer JobsProfessional Engineer Green Card Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Professional Engineer roles qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Most PE roles qualify for EB-3 as skilled worker positions requiring a bachelor's degree in engineering. Roles requiring an advanced degree or involving research leadership can qualify for EB-2. The determining factor is the minimum educational and experience requirements the employer sets in the PERM application, not simply your individual credentials.
How does the PERM green card process differ from H-1B sponsorship for engineers?
H-1B is a temporary work visa subject to an annual lottery with a six-year cap. PERM-based EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship leads to permanent residency with no lottery. The tradeoff is time: PERM requires DOL labor market testing before the I-140 petition, adding roughly six to eighteen months compared to a straightforward H-1B filing.
Which engineering disciplines sponsor green cards most frequently?
Civil, structural, geotechnical, and environmental engineering firms sponsor EB-3 green cards regularly, particularly for project-based roles that are difficult to fill domestically. Electrical and mechanical engineering roles in manufacturing and infrastructure also appear frequently in PERM filings. O*NET classifies most PE roles in Job Zone 4 or 5, which supports specialty occupation and advanced-degree eligibility arguments.
How can I find Professional Engineer jobs that offer green card sponsorship?
Search Migrate Mate to filter PE job listings by employers with documented green card sponsorship history. This saves significant time compared to applying broadly and then asking about sponsorship mid-process. Engineering firms that have sponsored before have established relationships with immigration counsel and understand the PERM timeline, making them more predictable sponsors.
Does my country of birth affect my EB-3 green card wait time as an engineer?
Yes. Nationals of India and China face significantly longer priority date backlogs due to per-country caps under U.S. immigration law, even at the EB-3 level. For most other nationalities, EB-3 priority dates are current or near-current, meaning the PERM and I-140 stages determine the majority of your total wait. USCIS publishes the Visa Bulletin monthly with current priority date cutoffs.
