Itron is innovating new ways for utilities and cities to manage energy and water. We create a more resourceful world to protect essential resources for today and tomorrow. Join us.
Itron DEM (Distributed Energy Management) is the industry's leading provider of integrated cloud-based demand response, energy efficiency and customer engagement solutions that enable electric utilities to ensure grid reliability, lower energy costs, meet regulatory demands and enhance the customer experience. Through its combination of software, hardware, and services, Itron DEM helps utilities optimize every aspect of a demand management program, from participant recruitment and device installation to call center support, control events and measurement and verification.
Itron is seeking a Software Quality Engineer based in Liberty Lake, WA whose primary focus is running our device lab and ensuring DEM software works correctly with the physical devices it controls. You will set up and maintain a wide range of devices — for example, purchasing, installing, and configuring a smart thermostat — and then test how DEM software connects to and operates them. Setup often requires coordinating across teams: working with IT to open network ports, with networking to grant DEM software access, and with security to get access approved. Devices like thermostats are set up standalone in the lab rather than wired into a live HVAC system or furnace, so you may need wiring help from other business units to make the thermostat believe it's properly connected.
Because Itron also manufactures its own distributed energy resources (DERs), such as load control switches, you may be working with early or partially built hardware — receiving an initial part, coordinating assembly support, and standing up the device in the lab before software testing can begin. Some DERs communicate over networks like cellular or GenX, so you'll also install and configure the necessary network equipment, such as a cellular access point. Since the team is distributed across time zones, you're also responsible for making the lab remotely accessible — for example, setting up cameras so teammates can observe devices at any hour, and enabling remote power cycling so the team can test power outage scenarios and troubleshoot devices without being physically present.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Set up, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory devices, including smart thermostats, load control switches, and other distributed energy resources (DERs) used to validate DEM software functionality.
- Install, configure, and maintain supporting network infrastructure, including cellular connectivity solutions and other communication equipment required for device operation.
- Collaborate with IT, networking, security, and cross-functional engineering teams to establish and maintain device connectivity, access permissions, and lab readiness.
- Support the integration and testing of new and prototype hardware, including early-stage DER products, by coordinating assembly, setup, and validation activities.
- Maintain remote access capabilities for a globally distributed team through cameras, remote monitoring solutions, and remote power-cycling capabilities.
- Proactively communicate device availability, testing readiness, maintenance schedules, and outage status to stakeholders, helping ensure lab operations support project timelines and team commitments.
- Develop and execute manual software test plans, test cases, and test procedures to validate product functionality, quality, and reliability.
- Identify, document, prioritize, and track software defects through resolution while partnering with engineering teams to support root cause analysis.
- Report test results, communicate quality risks, and provide actionable feedback that supports continuous product improvement.
- Participate in feature reviews, sprint activities, and quality planning discussions to develop a thorough understanding of product functionality and testing requirements.
- Demonstrate accountability, agility, collaboration, and continuous learning while supporting innovative solutions for utility customers.
Required Skills & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 0-2 years of professional experience in software quality assurance, software testing, engineering, or a related technical field, including internships, co-op experience, academic projects, or entry-level roles.
- Experience performing software testing, including test case creation, execution, and defect reporting.
- Basic familiarity with Linux operating systems and Git version control.
- Exposure to at least one programming or scripting language.
- Ability to perform hands-on technical work, including device setup, wiring, hardware configuration, and troubleshooting.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to collaborate across multiple teams and proactively follow up on dependencies.
- Familiarity with AI-assisted productivity tools such as Microsoft Copilot or Claude.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative environment and quickly learn new technologies and processes.
- Ability to work on-site a minimum of three days per week, with additional on-site presence as needed to support laboratory operations.
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and perform frequent bending, squatting, standing, and walking in an office/lab environment.
- Travel: 1-10%.
Preferred Skills & Experience
- Exposure to REST API testing tools and methodologies.
- Familiarity with Agile software development practices.
- Exposure to Docker, containerization technologies, or virtualized test environments.
- Knowledge of cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure or AWS.
- Familiarity with IoT, cellular, wireless, or connected-device networking concepts.
- Experience working with hardware/software integrated systems.
- Exposure to distributed energy resources (DERs), smart grid technologies, utility operations, or energy management solutions.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Green Card Sponsorship as a Quality Engineer
Document your ISO and quality credentials now
PERM audits often target Quality Engineers because the role has defined industry certifications. Gather your ASQ certifications, ISO 9001 training records, and degree transcripts before you start applying so you can respond to employer credential requests quickly.
Target manufacturers enrolled in E-Verify
Employers already using E-Verify have infrastructure for employment authorization compliance, which correlates with active PERM sponsorship programs. Filter your search to companies in automotive, aerospace, and medical device sectors with established HR and immigration support.
Search green card sponsors on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Quality Engineer roles by employers with active green card sponsorship history. This cuts out the guesswork of cold-applying to companies that have never filed PERM for this job category.
Clarify EB-2 versus EB-3 eligibility before offers
Quality Engineer roles typically require a bachelor's degree, qualifying under EB-3. If your role requires a master's or you hold a U.S. equivalent advanced degree, ask the employer whether they'll file under EB-2, which can improve your priority date position depending on your country of birth.
Verify your prevailing wage tier using OFLC Wage Search
DOL assigns your role a wage level from I to IV based on complexity and supervision. Your offer must meet that level for PERM certification to succeed. Check the OFLC Wage Search before negotiations so your salary aligns with what the employer will certify.
Confirm the employer understands PERM job description constraints
USCIS and DOL require the PERM job description to match your actual duties without inflating requirements. Quality Engineer postings that overstate education or experience requirements can trigger audits or denials, so confirm your employer's immigration counsel drafts the description to reflect your day-to-day work.
Green Card Quality Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Quality Engineer role qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship?
Most Quality Engineer positions qualify under EB-3 because they require a bachelor's degree in engineering, quality management, or a related field. EB-2 is available if the role genuinely requires a master's degree or if you have an advanced degree and your employer is willing to file under that preference category. Your country of birth determines which category offers a shorter wait given current priority dates.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for this role?
Green card sponsorship through PERM is permanent residency, not a temporary status. There's no lottery, no six-year cap, and no annual renewal. The tradeoff is time: PERM labor certification, the I-140 petition, and the visa queue can add two to five or more years depending on your country of birth. H-1B visa gets you working faster, but it expires; EB-3 sponsorship is a path to staying permanently.
What does the PERM process actually require from a Quality Engineer candidate?
Your employer files the PERM application with DOL after completing a mandatory recruitment period. DOL verifies that no qualified U.S. workers were available for the role at the offered wage. You need to meet every requirement listed in the job posting, so your credentials, including relevant certifications and degree transcripts, must exactly match what the employer advertises during that recruitment phase.
How do I find Quality Engineer jobs where the employer already sponsors green cards?
Search for roles using Migrate Mate, which filters Quality Engineer positions by employers with documented green card sponsorship history. Applying to companies that have previously filed PERM for similar engineering roles significantly improves your chances of getting a sponsorship conversation started, since those employers already have immigration counsel and internal processes in place.
Can I change employers after my green card sponsorship starts?
Once your I-140 petition is approved and your priority date is current or within 180 days, you may be able to port your green card to a new employer in the same or similar occupational classification under AC21 portability rules. Quality Engineer roles typically transfer well because the SOC code and job duties remain consistent across manufacturers. Consult an immigration attorney before making any job change mid-process.
