Get your CDL before applying abroad
A valid Commercial Driver's License with a passenger endorsement is a hard requirement for PERM certification in this role. Obtain it before pursuing sponsorship so employers can confirm you meet the minimum qualification without delays.
Target large public school districts directly
Large public school districts in states with persistent driver shortages are far more likely to have PERM infrastructure than small private operators. Search district HR portals for language like 'visa sponsorship' or 'permanent residency sponsorship' rather than filtering by job boards.
Verify prevailing wage before accepting any offer
Your employer must pay you the DOL-certified prevailing wage for your county and job classification. Use the OFLC Wage Search tool to check the wage level for your specific work location before your employer files the PERM application.
Search verified sponsoring employers through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter School Bus Driver roles by employers with confirmed green card filing history. This cuts out guesswork and connects you directly to districts and contractors that have already navigated the PERM process for this occupation.
Confirm the employer has E-Verify enrollment
PERM-sponsoring employers must be authorized to employ foreign nationals. Ask HR whether the organization is enrolled in E-Verify and has worked with an immigration attorney before, since first-time sponsors often underestimate PERM documentation requirements for transportation roles.
Understand the EB-3 priority date before you file
Once your employer files the I-140 petition, your priority date is set. For most countries outside India and China, EB-3 wait times are short. Check the USCIS Visa Bulletin monthly to track your place in the queue and plan your adjustment of status timeline accordingly.
Green Card School Bus Driver: Frequently Asked Questions
Can a School Bus Driver role qualify for EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Yes. School Bus Driver positions qualify under the EB-3 skilled worker or unskilled worker category depending on the specific role requirements. If the position requires a CDL and documented training, it typically falls under skilled worker. The employer must complete PERM labor certification with DOL before filing the I-140 petition with USCIS to begin the permanent residency process.
How does the green card process differ from an H-1B for this role?
The H-1B visa requires a specialty occupation with a bachelor's degree, which excludes most School Bus Driver positions. The EB-3 green card pathway through PERM is designed for exactly this type of skilled trade role. There's no annual lottery, and for most nationalities the EB-3 queue moves relatively quickly. The process leads to permanent residency rather than a temporary status that must be renewed every few years.
What does the PERM labor certification process involve for this occupation?
PERM requires your employer to conduct a supervised recruitment campaign proving no qualified U.S. workers are available for the role. DOL reviews the documentation and, if approved, the employer files the I-140 with USCIS. The entire process typically takes one to two years before you can file for adjustment of status, and your employer covers the filing costs under DOL rules.
Where can I find School Bus Driver jobs that offer green card sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lists School Bus Driver roles specifically filtered by employers with green card and PERM sponsorship history, so you're not sorting through listings that offer no immigration support. Public school districts and regional student transportation contractors are the most active sponsors in this category, particularly in states facing ongoing CDL driver shortages.
Can my employer use O*NET data to support my PERM application?
O*NET provides the standardized occupational classification and skill requirements that DOL uses to evaluate PERM filings. Your employer's immigration attorney will reference the O*NET profile for School Bus Driver when documenting the minimum job requirements and conducting the prevailing wage determination. Accurate alignment between the job posting and the O*NET profile reduces the risk of a DOL audit.
