Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Green Card Sponsorship as a Security Specialist
Document your specialized security credentials early
Compile certifications like CISSP, CPP, or Security+ alongside your degree transcripts before applying. PERM requires your employer to verify you meet the minimum job requirements, so organized credential documentation speeds up the labor certification filing.
Target employers with active PERM filing history
Search the DOL's OFLC disclosure data for companies that have filed PERM applications under security-related SOC codes. Employers who have completed the process before are far less likely to withdraw sponsorship midway when unexpected DOL audit requests arrive.
Find green-card-sponsoring roles through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Security Specialist jobs by employers with EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship history. Searching by role and sponsorship intent cuts the time spent on employers unlikely to navigate the PERM process for a security hire.
Clarify whether the role qualifies under EB-2 or EB-3
EB-2 requires the position to genuinely demand an advanced degree or its equivalent. Many Security Specialist postings list a bachelor's as sufficient, placing them under EB-3. Confirming this with your prospective employer before the offer stage prevents category mismatches at the I-140 filing step.
Negotiate PERM sponsorship terms before accepting an offer
Ask explicitly whether the employer will cover PERM labor certification and I-140 filing costs and who pays if you leave within two years. USCIS permits employers to seek repayment of some costs, so getting written clarity protects you before the process begins.
Understand how background investigation clearances affect your PERM timeline
Security Specialist roles in federal contracting or critical infrastructure often require clearance adjudications that run parallel to PERM. DOL's recruitment audit window and clearance timelines can overlap, so align both tracks with your employer's HR team to avoid delays at the labor certification stage.
Green Card Security Specialist: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Security Specialist roles typically qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Most Security Specialist positions qualify under EB-3 because the role commonly requires a bachelor's degree rather than an advanced degree. However, if the position genuinely requires a master's degree or equivalent in cybersecurity, information assurance, or a related field, your employer can pursue EB-2 instead. The actual job duties and minimum requirements stated in the PERM application determine the category, not the job title alone.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for a Security Specialist?
Green card sponsorship through EB-2 or EB-3 is permanent and not subject to the H-1B visa annual lottery. The PERM labor certification process takes longer upfront, often 12 to 24 months before USCIS even adjudicates the I-140, but the outcome is lawful permanent residency rather than a temporary status requiring renewal. There's no cap on EB-3 petition filings, which removes the lottery uncertainty that makes H-1B sponsorship unpredictable for many foreign professionals.
What does the PERM labor certification process look like for a Security Specialist role?
Your employer files an ETA Form 9089 with DOL after completing a regulated recruitment campaign to confirm no qualified U.S. workers are available for the position. DOL reviews the application, which can take six months or longer if selected for an audit. Once certified, your employer files the I-140 immigrant petition with USCIS. You can only begin adjustment of status or consular processing after your priority date becomes current on the Visa Bulletin.
How can I find Security Specialist jobs where employers are willing to sponsor a green card?
Use Migrate Mate to search for Security Specialist roles filtered by employers with documented EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship history. Many employers are open to green card sponsorship but don't advertise it explicitly in job postings, so filtering by verified sponsorship activity gives you a far more targeted list than generic job searches.
Can a security clearance requirement complicate my green card sponsorship as a foreign national?
Yes, roles requiring a U.S. government security clearance can create a significant conflict for foreign nationals because clearance adjudication typically requires U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency. If the position requires a clearance before you hold a green card, the employer may need to sponsor you into a non-clearance-required role first, then transition you after you receive permanent residency. Confirm the clearance requirements with your employer before the PERM process begins.
