Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as an Application Engineer
Confirm your role meets specialty occupation
Application Engineer positions vary widely. Before applying, verify the job description requires a bachelor's degree in a directly related field like engineering, computer science, or a technical discipline. Roles framed as 'preferred' rather than 'required' can trigger an RFE.
Pull LCA filings by occupation code
Search the OFLC Wage Search using SOC code 17-2199 or 15-1252 to identify which employers have certified LCAs for Application Engineer titles. This shows real filing activity, not just posted jobs.
Use Migrate Mate to filter verified sponsors
Search Application Engineer roles on Migrate Mate to surface employers with confirmed H-1B LCA filing history for this title, so you're targeting companies that have already navigated the process for your role.
Time your applications before January
H-1B petitions for cap-subject employers must be filed in April for an October 1 start date. Starting your Application Engineer job search by November gives you buffer for offer negotiation, LCA certification, and petition prep.
Ask about cap-exempt employer options
Universities, nonprofit research organizations, and certain government entities are cap-exempt, meaning they can file H-1B petitions year-round without lottery risk. Application Engineer roles exist at these institutions, particularly in lab automation and research support.
Clarify the prevailing wage level in your offer
Your offer salary must meet the DOL prevailing wage for the Application Engineer SOC code in your work location. Level I and Level II wages differ significantly. Confirm which wage level your employer certified on the LCA before signing.
H-1B Visa Application Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Application Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Most Application Engineer positions qualify because they require a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific technical field such as electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or computer science. The key is that the job description must state a degree in a related discipline is required, not merely preferred. If the posting is vague, ask the employer to clarify before USCIS reviews the petition.
Which SOC code applies to Application Engineer roles on an H-1B petition?
Application Engineer roles are typically classified under SOC 17-2199 (Engineers, All Other) or 15-1252 (Software Developers) depending on whether the role is hardware or software-focused. The correct code affects the prevailing wage your employer must certify on the LCA, so confirming the classification with your employer before filing matters. You can review occupation details using O*NET.
How do I find employers that actively sponsor H-1B visas for Application Engineers?
Search Application Engineer roles on Migrate Mate, which filters listings by verified H-1B LCA filing history so you can see which employers have actively sponsored this title. You can also cross-reference the DOL's OFLC disclosure data by SOC code to identify companies with recent certified LCAs for Application Engineer positions in your target metro area.
Can I switch employers on an H-1B while working as an Application Engineer?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules established by AC21, you can start working for a new employer as soon as the new H-1B petition is filed, provided your current petition has been approved for at least 180 days and you're moving into a same or similar SOC code role. The new employer files a transfer petition with USCIS, and you don't need to restart the lottery process.
What happens to my H-1B if my Application Engineer role is restructured or eliminated?
If your position is eliminated, you enter a 60-day grace period during which you can find a new H-1B sponsor, change to another visa status, or depart the U.S. The grace period begins the day your employment ends, not when you're notified. Starting a job search immediately is critical since LCA certification and petition filing take time even under standard processing.
