Verify your degree aligns with the role
USCIS requires a direct connection between your degree field and the Assistant Controller position. A degree in accounting or finance is cleanest. A business administration degree works if your coursework included substantial accounting components, document that alignment before applications.
Search LCA filings for active sponsors
Filter OFLC disclosure data for Assistant Controller and similar titles like Accounting Manager or Financial Controller. Employers who filed LCAs in the past two years are already set up to sponsor, which shortens your timeline from offer to petition.
Use Migrate Mate to target verified sponsors
Search Assistant Controller roles on Migrate Mate, which surfaces employers with confirmed H-1B LCA filing history. You'll skip companies that have never sponsored and focus on ones with an established H-1B process for finance roles.
Check the prevailing wage before negotiating
Run your target title and metro area through OFLC Wage Search before salary discussions. Your employer's LCA must certify at least the Level I or Level II prevailing wage, so knowing those thresholds helps you negotiate within a range USCIS will approve.
Ask employers about their cap-exempt filing options
Some controllers work for nonprofits, universities, or research institutions that file cap-exempt H-1B petitions. These employers can file any time of year with no lottery. If you're open to those sectors, they're worth prioritizing during your search.
Request premium processing when your start date is fixed
Assistant Controller roles often have defined onboarding dates tied to quarter-end or audit cycles. Premium processing gives USCIS a 15-business-day adjudication target, reducing the risk of a delayed approval disrupting a scheduled start.

Find Assistant Controller JobsAssistant Controller H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Assistant Controller role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. USCIS treats Assistant Controller positions as specialty occupations because the role requires at least a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a closely related field. The employer must document that the position's duties require that specific theoretical and practical knowledge. Roles that accept any degree field regardless of discipline are harder to defend, so the job description wording matters.
Which employers typically sponsor H-1B visas for Assistant Controller positions?
Mid-size and large companies with in-house accounting departments sponsor these roles most consistently, including publicly traded corporations, private equity-backed firms, healthcare systems, and manufacturing companies with complex consolidations. You can identify active sponsors by reviewing DOL LCA disclosure data filtered to financial controller and accounting manager titles. Migrate Mate shows this filing history by employer so you can target your applications efficiently.
How does the prevailing wage requirement affect Assistant Controller job offers?
Before filing the H-1B petition, your employer must obtain a certified LCA from DOL confirming the offered wage meets or exceeds the prevailing wage for the role in your work location. Prevailing wages for Assistant Controller positions vary by metro area and experience level. Use the OFLC Wage Search tool to check the Level I through Level IV thresholds for your target city before finalizing your offer letter.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new employer if I change Assistant Controller jobs?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can start working for a new employer as soon as the new I-129 petition is filed with USCIS, provided your current H-1B is valid and you haven't violated your status. The new employer files a transfer petition and you don't need to restart the cap process. You can continue working during adjudication without waiting for approval.
Does an Assistant Controller role at a CPA firm or accounting services company qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
It can, but accounting and professional services firms often structure these roles differently than corporate employers. If the position involves supervising client engagements or managing firm operations rather than general ledger oversight, USCIS will look closely at whether a specialized degree is genuinely required. The O*NET occupation profile for Financial Managers and similar titles can help document that the role meets the specialty occupation standard.
