Align your credentials to SOC codes
Azure DevOps Engineer roles typically file under SOC 15-1252 (Software Developers) or 15-1244 (Network and Computer Systems Administrators). Check O*NET to confirm which code matches your duties so your degree and experience align with the employer's LCA filing.
Filter employers by LCA filing history
Use Migrate Mate to identify companies that have filed Labor Condition Applications for DevOps or cloud infrastructure roles. Active LCA history signals an employer already understands the H-1B process and has counsel in place.
Target E-Verify enrolled employers early
If you're transitioning from F-1 OPT, your STEM OPT employer must be E-Verify enrolled. Confirm enrollment status before accepting an offer to avoid authorization gaps during the cap-gap period before October 1.
Benchmark your offer against prevailing wages
Run your job title, location, and experience level through the OFLC Wage Search before negotiating. Your offered salary must meet or exceed the DOL prevailing wage for the LCA to be certified, and Level I wages rarely reflect senior DevOps compensation.
Request cap-exempt filing if your employer qualifies
Universities, nonprofit research organizations, and government research institutions can file H-1B petitions year-round without lottery exposure. If you're open to those sectors, DevOps roles in higher education IT or research computing avoid the annual cap entirely.
Clarify amendment obligations before changing teams
Moving to a new project with a different work location or materially different duties can trigger an H-1B amendment requiring a new LCA. Confirm with your employer's immigration counsel before accepting an internal transfer to a different site or business unit.
H-1B Visa Azure Devops Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Azure DevOps Engineer role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. Azure DevOps Engineer positions qualify as specialty occupations when the role requires at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, engineering, or a closely related field. Employers document this requirement in the H-1B petition. Roles that accept any degree or substitute general experience without a specific field requirement can face RFEs from USCIS, so the job description wording matters.
Which SOC code do employers typically use when filing an H-1B for a DevOps role?
Most employers file DevOps Engineer positions under SOC 15-1252 (Software Developers) or SOC 15-1244 (Network and Computer Systems Administrators), depending on whether the role is weighted toward application pipelines or infrastructure configuration. The SOC code determines the prevailing wage level on the Labor Condition Application, so it directly affects the minimum salary the employer must certify with DOL.
How do I find employers actively sponsoring H-1B visas for DevOps engineers?
Migrate Mate surfaces employers with verified H-1B Labor Condition Application filing history filtered by role type, so you can focus on companies that have already navigated the sponsorship process for DevOps and cloud infrastructure positions. Targeting employers with recent LCA filings in your target metro reduces the risk of encountering companies that are unfamiliar with the process or unwilling to sponsor mid-search.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new employer if I switch DevOps roles?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file a transfer petition with USCIS, without waiting for approval, as long as you've been in valid H-1B status for at least 180 days. The new employer files a new I-129 and must certify a prevailing wage LCA for the new position. If your duties or work location differ substantially from your current petition, the employer may also need to file an amendment.
What happens to my H-1B status if my employer does a reduction in force?
Your H-1B status ends when your employment terminates, but USCIS provides a 60-day grace period to find a new sponsor, change status, or prepare to depart. A new employer can file an H-1B transfer petition during that window, and you can start working immediately upon filing rather than waiting for approval. Acting quickly to get a transfer petition filed before the grace period expires is the most important step.
