Verify your BOC certification before applying
USCIS requires proof of a qualifying degree and professional credentials for specialty occupation status. Your Board of Certification credential and state licensure documents must be current and ready to submit with the I-129 petition from day one.
Target cap-exempt employers in your search
Universities, university-affiliated medical centers, and nonprofit research institutions are cap-exempt H-1B employers. Athletic trainers hired by these organizations can file outside the April lottery window, giving you year-round options that most candidates overlook.
Search H-1B filing history on Migrate Mate
Filter your job search by employers with verified LCA filing history for athletic training roles. Migrate Mate surfaces DOL Labor Condition Application data so you can see which organizations have actively sponsored positions like yours, not just claimed they're open to it.
Request an OFLC Wage Search before negotiating
Your employer must pay the prevailing wage for your SOC code and location. Run the OFLC Wage Search for SOC 29-9091 in your target metro before accepting an offer so you can confirm the salary meets DOL requirements and avoid an LCA filing problem later.
Ask employers about premium processing upfront
Standard I-129 processing can run several months. Confirm whether your prospective employer will elect premium processing so your petition is adjudicated within 15 business days, which matters if you're transitioning from OPT or a cap-gap period.
Document the specialty occupation connection clearly
Athletic trainer roles occasionally draw USCIS Requests for Evidence questioning whether the position truly requires a bachelor's degree. Gather the job description, O*NET classification, and any institutional requirement language before your employer files to preempt that challenge.

Find Certified Athletic Trainer JobsCertified Athletic Trainer H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Certified Athletic Trainer role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. Athletic training meets the H-1B specialty occupation standard because the profession requires at minimum a bachelor's degree in athletic training or a closely related field, and the Board of Certification credential reinforces that requirement. USCIS has approved H-1B petitions for this role, though employers should document the degree requirement explicitly in the job description to reduce the risk of a Request for Evidence.
Which types of employers most commonly sponsor H-1B visas for Athletic Trainers?
Universities and college athletic departments are the most active sponsors, partly because they are cap-exempt H-1B employers. Hospital systems, physical therapy networks, and professional and minor league sports organizations also sponsor, but they are cap-subject. You can identify employers with actual LCA filing history for athletic training roles by browsing Migrate Mate, which filters listings by verified DOL sponsorship data.
How does state licensure affect my H-1B petition as an Athletic Trainer?
Most states require a separate athletic training license in addition to your BOC certification. USCIS expects you to hold, or be eligible for, the required state license for the work location before the petition is approved. If you're relocating to a new state, confirm that state's licensure requirements early and include any pending licensure documentation in the I-129 package to avoid delays.
Can I switch employers on an H-1B as a Certified Athletic Trainer?
Yes. H-1B portability under AC21 lets you change employers once your petition has been pending for 180 days or more, as long as the new role is in the same or a similar occupational classification. Your new employer must file an H-1B transfer petition before you start. For cap-exempt university roles, the transfer can happen outside the lottery cycle entirely.
What prevailing wage level should I expect my employer to file at?
DOL assigns prevailing wage levels based on job duties, experience requirements, and the metropolitan area. Entry-level athletic trainer roles typically fall at Level I or II, while positions with supervisory responsibilities or specialized clinical settings often warrant Level III. Your employer determines the level when filing the LCA, and you can verify the applicable wage range using the OFLC Wage Search for SOC code 29-9091 in your target location.
