Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship in Child Psychiatrist
Verify your medical credentials transfer cleanly
If you trained outside the U.S., confirm your ECFMG certification and residency completion documents are in order before applying. USCIS requires these to establish specialty occupation status for physician roles, and gaps create RFEs.
Search verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Filter by child psychiatry or psychiatric subspecialties on Migrate Mate to see employers with confirmed DOL Labor Condition Application filing history in your target state, so you're not guessing which systems have actually sponsored this role before.
Confirm the LCA wage level matches your experience
Your employer files a Labor Condition Application with DOL before petitioning USCIS. Use the OFLC Wage Search to check prevailing wage levels for psychiatrists in your metro area and verify the offered wage meets at least Level I requirements for your experience tier.
Ask about cap-exempt status before accepting any offer
Academic medical centers, children's hospitals affiliated with universities, and nonprofit research institutions often qualify as cap-exempt H-1B employers. Cap-exempt sponsorship lets you start any time of year without waiting for the October 1 start date.
Get state medical board licensure moving immediately
H-1B approval for physicians requires a valid state license or a letter confirming you've met all licensing requirements. Start your state board application the moment you have a job offer, since licensing timelines vary by state and can delay your petition filing.

Find Child Psychiatrist JobsChild Psychiatrist H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Child Psychiatrist role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. Child psychiatry requires a medical degree, residency completion, and subspecialty fellowship training, which satisfies USCIS's specialty occupation requirement of a minimum bachelor's degree in a specific field. The O*NET classification for psychiatrists confirms the degree requirement. Board certification or eligibility in child and adolescent psychiatry further strengthens the petition.
Which types of employers typically sponsor H-1B visas for Child Psychiatrists?
Academic medical centers, children's hospitals, integrated health systems, community mental health centers, and federally qualified health centers are the most active sponsors. Many of these are nonprofit or university-affiliated, which can also qualify them as cap-exempt H-1B employers. Browse employers with verified LCA filing history for psychiatric roles on Migrate Mate before applying.
Can I start working before October 1 if I'm subject to the H-1B cap?
Not unless your employer is cap-exempt. Cap-subject H-1B approvals have an October 1 start date tied to the federal fiscal year. If you're on OPT or another authorized status, you may be able to bridge the gap using cap-gap protections while your petition is pending after the lottery.
How does H-1B sponsorship interact with a J-1 waiver for physicians?
Many foreign medical graduates complete residency on J-1 status, which carries a two-year home residency requirement. A J-1 waiver, often obtained through a Conrad 30 state program, removes that requirement and allows the employer to then file an H-1B petition. Employers in underserved areas frequently sponsor both the waiver and the subsequent H-1B.
What documents does an employer need to file my H-1B petition as a Child Psychiatrist?
Your employer needs a certified LCA from DOL, your medical school diploma, ECFMG certification if you trained outside the U.S., residency and fellowship completion letters, your state medical license or a board letter confirming you've met all requirements, and a support letter explaining the specialty occupation basis for the role. USCIS processes the I-129 petition using these documents.
