Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship in CRT
Verify your credentials before targeting employers
Your NBRC credentials and state respiratory therapy license must be current before any H-1B petition can be filed. Gaps or pending renewals give employers a compliance reason to delay or withdraw sponsorship offers.
Use OFLC Wage Search to benchmark your offer
CRT prevailing wages vary by setting, shift type, and metro area. Pull the Level II or III wage for your target city before negotiating so you know whether an offer meets DOL's minimum and what your employer must certify on the LCA.
Target health systems with H-1B filing history
Large hospital networks and academic medical centers file H-1B petitions routinely for allied health roles. Search Migrate Mate to find CRT positions at employers with verified H-1B sponsorship history, filtered by location and filing activity.
Check that your job title maps to a specialty occupation
USCIS requires CRT roles to demonstrate that a bachelor's degree in a directly related field is a standard minimum requirement. Positions titled 'respiratory aide' or 'technician assistant' often don't qualify. Confirm the job description requires at least an associate or bachelor's-level credential before applying.
Clarify cap-gap coverage if your OPT ends mid-filing
If you're transitioning from F-1 OPT to H-1B, a timely-filed petition extends your work authorization through September 30 under cap-gap rules. Confirm your employer files before your EAD expires, not after, to avoid an unauthorized work gap during USCIS processing.
Negotiate premium processing before signing your offer
Standard H-1B adjudication can run three to six months. If your start date is firm, ask the employer to upgrade to premium processing, which commits USCIS to a 15-business-day decision. Settle this in writing before your offer letter is finalized.
H-1B Visa CRT: Frequently Asked Questions
Do CRT jobs qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, registered respiratory therapist roles qualify as a specialty occupation under H-1B rules when the position requires at least an associate or bachelor's degree in respiratory therapy or a closely related field. Employers must document that the degree requirement is standard for the role, not just a preference, in the Labor Condition Application filed with DOL.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for respiratory therapists?
Hospital systems, academic medical centers, long-term acute care facilities, and large outpatient networks are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for CRT roles. Smaller clinics and private practices rarely have the HR infrastructure to manage the filing process. You can browse verified H-1B sponsoring employers with current CRT openings on Migrate Mate.
Does my NBRC credential affect my H-1B eligibility?
Your Registered Respiratory Therapist credential from the NBRC strengthens the specialty occupation argument because it signals a nationally recognized professional standard tied to a specific degree pathway. Employers list it as a requirement in the job description, which helps USCIS confirm that the role meets the degree threshold. A lapsed credential can complicate or delay the petition.
How does the H-1B lottery affect CRT job seekers?
CRT petitions filed for non-exempt employers enter the annual H-1B cap lottery each April, with a registration window typically in March. If you're not selected, your employer can refile the following year or explore cap-exempt alternatives such as positions at nonprofit hospitals affiliated with a university or a research institution, which aren't subject to the annual cap.
Can I switch CRT employers while on H-1B status?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can start working for a new employer as soon as the new employer files an H-1B transfer petition on your behalf, without waiting for USCIS approval, as long as you've been in valid H-1B status. The new employer must file a separate petition and LCA confirming the role still meets specialty occupation and prevailing wage requirements.
