Verify your SOC code before applying
Data Analytics Engineers are typically classified under SOC 15-1243 (Database Architects) or 15-1252 (Software Developers). Confirm which code your prospective employer will use, since the SOC code determines your prevailing wage level and LCA requirements.
Check employer LCA history on Migrate Mate
Search DOL LCA disclosure data on Migrate Mate to see which employers have filed for your specific SOC code and job level. That filing history is a stronger signal of sponsorship readiness than a job posting alone.
Document cloud and pipeline tool proficiency clearly
USCIS adjudicators look for a direct link between your degree and the role. List specific platforms like Spark, dbt, or Snowflake in your resume and reference them in your employer's specialty occupation letter to strengthen that connection.
Target E-Verify enrolled employers early
If you're on OPT and hoping your employer will sponsor your H-1B, confirm they're enrolled in E-Verify before accepting an offer. STEM OPT authorization requires E-Verify enrollment, and it also signals organizational readiness for future H-1B filing.
Negotiate offer timing around the H-1B cap year
H-1B registrations open in March for an October 1 start date. If you receive an offer in June, ask whether the employer will file in the next cap season or use a cap-exempt entity. That answer changes your start date by up to 16 months.
Use OFLC Wage Search to benchmark level before negotiating
Your LCA must certify a wage at or above the prevailing rate for your SOC code, job level, and work location. Pull the DOL OFLC Wage Search figure before salary discussions so you know the floor your employer is legally required to meet.
H-1B Visa Data Analytics Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Data Analytics Engineer role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. USCIS defines specialty occupation as a role requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field. Data Analytics Engineer positions typically require a degree in computer science, statistics, data science, or engineering. The employer must document that the specific duties, not just the job title, require that level of theoretical knowledge.
Which employers typically sponsor H-1B visas for Data Analytics Engineer roles?
Technology companies, financial services firms, healthcare systems, and large retail organizations with dedicated data teams are among the most consistent H-1B sponsors for this role. You can filter by employer and SOC code on Migrate Mate to see which companies have active LCA filings for data engineering positions before you apply.
What wage level should a Data Analytics Engineer expect on an LCA?
DOL classifies H-1B workers at four wage levels based on experience and job complexity. Most Data Analytics Engineer roles fall at Level II or Level III, though senior or staff-level positions reach Level IV. Your employer determines the level, and you can verify the corresponding prevailing wage for your location using the OFLC Wage Search tool.
Can a Data Analytics Engineer transfer an H-1B to a new employer mid-year?
Yes. H-1B portability under AC21 lets you start working for a new employer as soon as the transfer petition is filed, without waiting for approval, as long as your current H-1B has been approved for at least 180 days. Your new employer files a new I-129 with USCIS and a new LCA reflecting the updated role and location.
Does a Data Analytics Engineer need a PERM labor certification for an H-1B?
No. PERM is a green card process, not part of the H-1B. Your employer only needs to file an LCA with DOL, certifying your wage meets the prevailing rate, before submitting the H-1B petition to USCIS. PERM becomes relevant only if the employer later sponsors you for an EB-2 or EB-3 employment-based green card.
