INTRODUCTION
As the Associate Director of Philanthropy, you will qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donor prospects, focusing on individuals, corporations, and foundations. While you will primarily support the MNDK (MN, ND, SD) Chapter, we collaborate frequently with colleagues across the globe to implement direct asks that maximize overall giving to the Conservancy.
As the Associate Director of Philanthropy, you will be responsible for building and managing a portfolio of 75-125 qualified donors, including donors with the capacity to give over $100,000. You will have an annual fundraising goal of $750,000 or more, along with a target for bequest/planned giving commitments. To reach these goals, you will conduct 75-125 donor visits and 225-375 donor moves each year, as well as making phone calls to qualify and disqualify prospects.
You will be expected to understand and apply complex principles of developing donor strategies in your work. You will also share information about the Conservancy’s mission, vision, and priorities in broad terms and encourage donors to make flexible gifts. You will listen for gifts of assets or other non-cash gift opportunities, such as planned gifts and trade lands, and be required to use the Conservancy’s donor database and develop funding proposals in partnership with our team’s donor communication specialist.
This position requires working in a hybrid environment (2 days in our Minneapolis office and 3 days remote). The preferred candidate is based in the Twin Cities area with an ability to travel across Minnesota as needed for donor visits. You can expect additional travel in North Dakota, South Dakota, and outside of our chapter for TNC field trips and training opportunities and may need to work overtime as needed. All travel combined would be roughly 2-3 weeks per year. The position allows for some flexible hours for work-life balance. The work environment may involve infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and minor physical exertion and/or strain.

Document your degree's direct field alignment
USCIS scrutinizes whether your degree field directly relates to fundraising leadership. A degree in nonprofit management, public administration, or business strengthens your petition more than a general humanities degree, even with equivalent experience.
Target cap-exempt institutions first
Universities, hospitals, and affiliated research foundations are cap-exempt H-1B employers, meaning they can file year-round without lottery exposure. Director of Philanthropy roles at these institutions are among the most accessible H-1B paths in the nonprofit sector.
Search LCA filing history on Migrate Mate
Filter by occupation code to see which employers have filed Labor Condition Applications for philanthropy and development roles. This surfaces real sponsorship history, not just employer claims, so you target organizations that have actually sponsored this job type.
Verify prevailing wage tier before negotiating
Use OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for fundraising manager or development director roles in your target city before accepting an offer. Your employer's LCA must certify wages at or above that level, and knowing the threshold protects you in negotiations.
Request premium processing if your start date is firm
If your offer has a defined start date tied to a campaign cycle or fiscal year, ask your employer to file with premium processing. USCIS typically adjudicates premium I-129 petitions within 15 business days, reducing uncertainty around your onboarding timeline.
Clarify who files and pays before signing
Nonprofits sometimes ask candidates to cover filing fees, which USCIS prohibits for certain mandatory costs. Confirm in writing that your employer covers the I-129 filing fee and any attorney costs before you sign an offer letter.
H-1B Visa Director Of Philanthropy: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Director of Philanthropy role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the employer can demonstrate the position normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as nonprofit management, public administration, business, or communications. USCIS evaluates the job duties, not just the title, so your employer's petition should document why a specific degree background is required for the fundraising strategy and stakeholder leadership work involved.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for philanthropy and fundraising directors?
Universities, academic medical centers, large hospital systems, and major foundations are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for Director of Philanthropy roles. These institutions are often cap-exempt, meaning they can file petitions at any time rather than entering the annual lottery. Large national nonprofits with established HR infrastructure also sponsor, though less frequently than higher education or health system employers. Browse verified filing history on Migrate Mate to identify active sponsors by role type and location.
How does the H-1B lottery affect my job search for this role?
If your target employer is a for-profit entity or a nonprofit without cap-exempt status, your petition enters the annual H-1B lottery each April with a roughly 25 to 35 percent selection rate. Cap-exempt employers, including most universities and nonprofit hospitals, bypass the lottery entirely. Prioritizing cap-exempt institutions removes that uncertainty and lets you start work as soon as USCIS approves the petition, which can be as early as the filing date.
What happens to my H-1B status if I transition from a university to a private foundation?
Changing employers requires your new employer to file a new H-1B petition before you begin work there. If the new employer is cap-subject and you've already been counted against the cap in a previous H-1B, you don't re-enter the lottery. Your status and work authorization remain valid under your current employer until USCIS receives the new petition, which you can confirm using your receipt notice.
Does the O*NET classification for this role support specialty occupation status?
O*NET classifies fundraising manager and development director roles under job zone four or five, which correspond to positions typically requiring a four-year degree or higher. Your employer can reference the O*NET occupation profile in the H-1B petition to support the argument that the position meets the specialty occupation threshold, particularly when documenting the typical education requirements for the role in industry practice.
