Verify your degree aligns with the role
USCIS scrutinizes Director of Project Management petitions when the applicant's degree is in a broad field like general business. A degree in engineering, information systems, or operations management strengthens the specialty occupation argument significantly.
Target employers with cap-exempt filing history
Universities, nonprofits affiliated with higher education, and government research organizations are cap-exempt. For a senior role like this, those employers can file year-round without lottery risk, which shortens your path to an approved petition.
Search LCA filings on Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers
DOL Labor Condition Application data shows which companies have filed for project management director roles. Use Migrate Mate to filter by occupation code and location so you're applying to employers with a documented H-1B sponsorship track record.
Check the prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your job title and location. Use the OFLC Wage Search before salary discussions so you know the Level III or IV wage floor that applies to a director-level position in your metro area.
Clarify H-1B transfer terms before resigning your current job
If you're already on H-1B, portability under AC21 lets you start a new director role once the new employer files, without waiting for approval. Confirm the new employer will file before you give notice to avoid any gap in authorized status.
Document your management scope for the I-129 petition
USCIS expects detailed evidence that a Director of Project Management role requires a specific bachelor's degree. Your offer letter and the employer's support letter should quantify the number of direct reports, budget authority, and cross-functional scope of the position.

Find Director Of Project Management JobsDirector Of Project Management H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Director of Project Management role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the employer can demonstrate the role normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field such as engineering, business administration, or information systems. Broad job descriptions that accept any degree weaken the specialty occupation argument. The stronger the connection between your degree field and the position's core duties, the more defensible the petition is.
How do I find employers who sponsor H-1B visas for project management director roles?
Migrate Mate filters job listings by verified DOL Labor Condition Application filings, so you can see which companies have sponsored H-1B workers in project management occupations. This is more reliable than asking recruiters, since LCA data is publicly disclosed and reflects actual filing behavior rather than stated intentions.
What happens to my H-1B if my employer eliminates the Director of Project Management role?
Your employer is responsible for withdrawing the H-1B and covering your return transportation costs if they terminate employment. You have a 60-day grace period to find a new employer, change status, or depart. If you secure a new offer quickly, portability under AC21 lets you start work once the new petition is filed, even before it's approved.
Can I be promoted from a project manager to a Director of Project Management while on H-1B without filing a new petition?
A promotion to director typically requires an amended H-1B petition because the job duties, salary, and SOC occupation code often change materially. USCIS requires employers to file an amended I-129 whenever there is a material change in the terms of employment. Starting the new role before the amended petition is filed creates compliance risk for both you and your employer.
Does PMP certification affect my H-1B petition for a Director of Project Management role?
PMP certification strengthens your credentials but does not substitute for the degree requirement. USCIS evaluates specialty occupation based on academic preparation, not professional certifications. Your degree field must align with the position's specialized duties. That said, employers and immigration attorneys often cite PMP as supporting evidence that the role demands a theoretical and practical body of knowledge consistent with a specialty occupation.
