Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Storage Engineer
Verify your SOC code before applying
Storage Engineer roles typically file under SOC 15-1244 (Computer Network Architects) or 15-1299. Pull the O*NET profile for your target code and confirm your resume reflects the listed tasks and required knowledge areas. Mismatched SOC codes trigger LCA scrutiny.
Check employer LCA history on Migrate Mate
Before applying, search the employer's DOL filing history on Migrate Mate to confirm they've filed LCAs for storage or infrastructure roles. Employers with no prior H-1B activity in this job family often lack the internal process to sponsor efficiently.
Target employers with E-Verify enrollment
H-1B employers must participate in E-Verify. Filter your search to companies already enrolled rather than chasing employers who'd need to register from scratch. Enrollment gaps can delay your I-9 completion and push back your start date.
Document vendor certifications before the LCA stage
Storage roles often require certifications like NetApp NCDA, Dell EMC, or Veeam. Gather these credentials before your employer files the LCA. USCIS may issue an RFE if the petition lists specialty duties your documented credentials don't substantiate.
Confirm your wage tier against OFLC Wage Search
Look up your worksite's prevailing wage using OFLC Wage Search under the relevant SOC code before your offer letter is finalized. If the offered salary falls below Level II for your metro area, your employer may need to renegotiate or reclassify the role.
File premium processing if your start date is fixed
Standard H-1B adjudication can run four to six months. If your employer needs you on-site for a data center migration or infrastructure rollout by a specific date, request premium processing through USCIS, which targets a 15-business-day decision.
H-1B Visa Storage Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Storage Engineer role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. Storage Engineer positions qualify when they require at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, information systems, or a directly related field. The role must involve theoretical and practical application of highly specialized knowledge. USCIS evaluates the actual job duties, not just the title, so your offer letter and employer's support letter should detail the technical scope of the position.
Which SOC code do employers use when filing an H-1B for a Storage Engineer?
Most employers file under SOC 15-1244 (Computer Network Architects) or 15-1299 (Computer and Information Technology Occupations, All Other), depending on whether the role is weighted toward network storage infrastructure or broader systems administration. The SOC code determines the prevailing wage tier, so confirm the classification matches your actual duties before the LCA is filed with DOL.
How do I find employers actively sponsoring H-1B visas for Storage Engineer roles?
Migrate Mate surfaces employers with verified LCA filing history in infrastructure and storage roles, so you can focus on companies that have already navigated the H-1B process for this job family. Employers with prior filings in this SOC category are better positioned to sponsor efficiently, with established payroll structures and immigration counsel already familiar with the role type.
Can my H-1B petition be denied if I hold a three-year bachelor's degree?
USCIS may scrutinize three-year degrees, particularly those from India or Australia, when assessing whether they're equivalent to a U.S. four-year bachelor's degree. A credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization documenting the degree's equivalency strengthens your petition. Some employers proactively request this evaluation before filing to reduce the chance of an RFE on educational qualification grounds.
What happens to my H-1B status if my employer's storage project ends before my visa expires?
If your employment ends before your H-1B expiration date, you have a 60-day grace period to find a new sponsor, change status, or depart the U.S. A new employer can file an H-1B transfer, which lets you start work once USCIS receives the petition. You don't need to wait for approval to begin work under the transfer, provided you're still in a valid status period.
