Verify your state licensure transfers cleanly
Principal licensure requirements vary by state, and USCIS will scrutinize whether your credentials satisfy the specialty occupation standard. Confirm your home-country or current-state license is recognized before targeting employers in a new state.
Target charter networks over single-school districts
Multi-school charter management organizations file LCAs across multiple sites and often have established H-1B workflows. A single rural district filing its first-ever petition carries far more administrative uncertainty than a network that files annually.
Search verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Elementary School Principal openings by employers with confirmed LCA filing history. That filing record tells you which districts and charter networks have already cleared DOL prevailing-wage certification for this occupation code.
Pull the prevailing wage before salary negotiations
Look up your target district's county and the SOC code for Education Administrators, Elementary using the OFLC Wage Search. Your offered salary must meet at least the Level I prevailing wage, and many districts won't negotiate above their posted pay scale.
Clarify who covers the I-129 filing fee upfront
School districts, especially public ones, often have rigid HR budgets. Confirm in writing whether the district covers USCIS filing fees before accepting an offer. The employer is legally required to pay the base I-129 fee, but disputes over premium processing costs are common.
Time your application around the academic hiring cycle
Most districts post principal vacancies between January and April for the following school year. Filing an H-1B petition in April for an October 1 start date aligns with both the cap-subject lottery window and the district's typical onboarding timeline.

Find Elementary School Principal JobsElementary School Principal H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Elementary School Principal role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes. USCIS recognizes school principal positions as specialty occupations because the role typically requires a master's degree in educational leadership, administration, or a related field, along with state licensure. The O*NET profile for Education Administrators, Elementary and Secondary School confirms the degree requirement, which is the foundation of the specialty occupation determination.
Can public school districts sponsor H-1B visas for principal positions?
Public school districts can sponsor H-1B visas, but they're cap-exempt only if they qualify as nonprofit research or educational institutions under INA Section 214(c)(5). Most public K-12 districts are cap-subject, meaning your petition enters the annual lottery. Charter schools operated as nonprofits may qualify for cap-exempt status, which eliminates the lottery entirely.
How do I find Elementary School Principal jobs where employers already sponsor H-1B visas?
Migrate Mate shows which school districts and charter networks have active LCA filing history for education administrator roles. Filtering by employers with confirmed filings saves time compared to applying broadly and discovering late in the process that a district has never sponsored a visa before.
What happens to my H-1B status if my principal contract isn't renewed?
If your district doesn't renew your contract, you have a 60-day grace period to find a new sponsoring employer, change to another visa status, or depart the U.S. A new employer must file an H-1B transfer petition before your grace period ends. Because principal hiring runs on an annual academic cycle, starting your job search early in the school year reduces the risk of a gap.
Does a state teaching license satisfy the H-1B specialty occupation requirement for a principal role?
A teaching license alone isn't sufficient. USCIS looks for a principal or administrator license alongside an advanced degree in educational leadership or administration. If your credential comes from another country, you'll need a formal evaluation from a credential evaluation service to establish U.S. degree equivalency before your employer files the LCA with the DOL.
