Verify your SOC code before applying
Engineering Program Manager roles get filed under different SOC codes depending on the employer. Confirm the intended code using O*NET before accepting an offer, since it determines your prevailing wage level and can affect RFE risk.
Target employers with LCA filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter Engineering Program Manager roles by employers who have active LCA filings for this title. That history confirms they've run the DOL process before and aren't learning on your case.
Document your technical program scope clearly
USCIS scrutinizes whether EPM roles meet specialty occupation requirements. Your resume and offer letter should show you're managing engineering deliverables, not just timelines. Scope descriptions that highlight systems integration, technical tradeoffs, or cross-functional engineering decisions reduce RFE exposure.
Ask about premium processing before signing
Standard H-1B adjudication can run five to ten months. If your OPT or current status expires before then, confirm during negotiation whether the employer will pay for premium processing, which targets a 15-business-day decision from USCIS.
Check if the employer is E-Verify enrolled
If you're on STEM OPT and transitioning to H-1B cap-gap, your employer must be E-Verify enrolled to extend your work authorization. Confirm enrollment before your OPT end date, not after a gap has already created a status problem.
Align your degree field to the role description
A bachelor's in systems engineering or computer science maps cleanly to most EPM job descriptions. If your degree is in a tangentially related field, ask the employer to tailor the LCA job duties to reflect the specific engineering discipline your coursework covered.
H-1B Visa Engineering Program Manager: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Engineering Program Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B?
Yes, but the job description has to show engineering-specific duties that require at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related technical field. Generic program management tasks without an engineering component can trigger an RFE. Employers typically strengthen the petition by tying the role to systems architecture, hardware development cycles, or software delivery under engineering constraints.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Engineering Program Managers?
Large technology, aerospace, defense, and semiconductor companies file the most LCAs for this title. To find employers actively sponsoring this role, browse Engineering Program Manager listings on Migrate Mate, which filters by verified LCA filing history so you're only seeing companies that have already completed the DOL process for this job title.
How does the H-1B prevailing wage apply to Engineering Program Manager positions?
The employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for the SOC code and geographic area listed on the LCA. EPM roles often fall under computer and information systems managers or engineering managers depending on the employer's classification. You can look up the applicable wage floor for any location using the OFLC Wage Search before evaluating an offer.
Can I switch employers after my H-1B is approved for an EPM role?
Yes. Under H-1B portability, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file an H-1B transfer petition, provided your original petition was approvable and you've maintained status. The new employer files a new I-129, and you don't need to wait for approval before your start date as long as the petition is pending.
What happens to my H-1B status if my Engineering Program Manager role is eliminated?
You have a 60-day grace period from your last day of employment to find a new sponsoring employer, change to another valid status, or depart the U.S. Your new employer must file an H-1B transfer petition before the grace period ends. Starting a job search the day your role is eliminated, not weeks later, is what makes that window workable.
