Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Firmware Engineer
Match your degree to the SOC code
USCIS evaluates specialty occupation by whether your degree field directly relates to the role. For firmware roles, electrical engineering, computer engineering, or computer science degrees map most cleanly to SOC 17-2061. A mismatch invites an RFE, so verify the job description before applying.
Search LCA filings by firmware job title
Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by verified DOL LCA filings for firmware and embedded systems roles. This surfaces companies that have sponsored similar positions before, so you're targeting employers with an active H-1B filing history rather than guessing.
Document your embedded systems portfolio carefully
USCIS officers often request evidence that a firmware role requires a theoretical and practical application of specialized knowledge. Gather project documentation showing RTOS, hardware abstraction layers, or protocol stack work. These artifacts support the specialty occupation argument in your I-129 petition.
Check the OFLC Wage Search before negotiating
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the prevailing wage for your specific SOC code and work location. Run the OFLC Wage Search before your offer conversation so you understand the wage floor and can flag any offer that could jeopardize certification.
Clarify work location details early in the offer stage
Firmware engineers frequently work on-site at manufacturing or hardware facilities. If your role involves multiple work locations or a transition from remote to on-site, your employer must file amended LCAs for each new worksite. Confirm this with your employer before accepting an offer to avoid compliance gaps.
Use O*NET to strengthen specialty occupation evidence
The O*NET occupation profile for Electronics Engineers includes the knowledge domains and degree requirements adjudicators reference. Print the relevant O*NET entry and include it in your petition package to preemptively address specialty occupation scrutiny without waiting for an RFE.

Find Firmware Engineer JobsFirmware Engineer H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Firmware Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, firmware engineering qualifies as a specialty occupation when the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a directly related field. USCIS evaluates the job description, not just the title, so your employer's offer letter and LCA should clearly state the degree requirement and tie it to the specific technical duties of the role.
Which SOC code do employers typically use when filing an LCA for a Firmware Engineer?
Most employers file under SOC 17-2061 (Computer Hardware Engineers) or, for roles with a stronger software emphasis, SOC 15-1299 (Computer Occupations, All Other). The SOC code determines the prevailing wage level your employer must certify, so confirm with your employer which code they intend to use before your offer is finalized, since it affects your wage floor.
How do I find employers who have sponsored H-1B visas for Firmware Engineer positions?
Migrate Mate filters job listings by verified DOL LCA filing history, so you can identify employers who have previously sponsored firmware and embedded systems roles. This is more reliable than guessing based on company size, since even mid-size hardware companies with small teams regularly file H-1B petitions for specialized engineering positions.
Can my employer file for premium processing on my Firmware Engineer H-1B petition?
Yes, premium processing is available for H-1B petitions including firmware engineering roles. USCIS guarantees a decision within 15 business days under premium processing. Employers in hardware development cycles often request it to align hiring timelines with product launch schedules. Your employer pays the premium processing fee directly to USCIS.
What happens to my H-1B status if my firmware engineering role shifts to a different work location or project scope?
Material changes to your H-1B terms, including a new worksite outside your employer's existing LCA coverage area or a significant shift in job duties, require your employer to file an amended H-1B petition with USCIS. Hardware engineers who move between facilities or take on embedded software responsibilities beyond the original petition scope should confirm with their employer whether an amendment is needed.
