Frame your degree for specialty occupation
USCIS requires your degree to directly relate to fundraising or nonprofit management. A marketing, communications, or business degree works, but document the connection explicitly in your resume and cover letter before applications go out.
Target employers with PERM filing history
Universities, hospital foundations, and large national nonprofits file H-1B petitions regularly. Search Migrate Mate to filter Fundraising Director roles by employers with verified LCA filing history, so you're not cold-pitching sponsorship to organizations that have never done it.
Verify the prevailing wage before negotiating
Your offered salary must meet the DOL prevailing wage for your SOC code and work location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to confirm the Level II or III wage floor for your city before salary discussions, so you don't accept an offer that can't clear the LCA.
Check that the job description supports H-1B filing
Fundraising Director postings that list a degree as preferred rather than required can complicate the specialty occupation argument. Ask hiring managers to confirm the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field before your employer files Form I-129.
Use O*NET to strengthen your specialty occupation case
The O*NET profile for Fundraising Director documents the degree requirements and knowledge domains USCIS evaluates. Pull the relevant education and knowledge fields from O*NET and make sure your credentials and job offer letter match them specifically.

Find Fundraising Director JobsFundraising Director H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Fundraising Director role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, provided the employer can demonstrate the position normally requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field, such as nonprofit management, business administration, communications, or public administration. USCIS evaluates the job duties, industry norms, and the employer's actual requirements. A posting that lists a degree as preferred rather than required can weaken the specialty occupation argument, so the offer letter and job description language matter.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Fundraising Directors?
Universities, hospital foundations, large national nonprofits, and arts and cultural institutions are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for this role because they have dedicated HR and legal teams experienced with the petition process. Smaller community nonprofits rarely sponsor because of cost and administrative complexity. Use Migrate Mate to identify organizations with a verified LCA filing history for fundraising and development roles before you apply.
How does the DOL prevailing wage requirement affect a Fundraising Director offer?
Your employer must pay at least the prevailing wage for the Fundraising Director SOC code in the work location before USCIS will certify the LCA. The wage level depends on your experience and the complexity of the role, typically Level II or III. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the current wage floor for your city and confirm any offer meets or exceeds it before your employer submits the LCA to DOL.
Can a nonprofit employer sponsor an H-1B for a Fundraising Director?
Yes. Nonprofits that qualify as cap-exempt institutions, such as universities and affiliated research organizations, can file H-1B petitions outside the annual lottery at any time of year. Other nonprofits are cap-subject and must compete in the March lottery for an October 1 start date. Cap-exempt sponsorship is a significant advantage if you're targeting higher education or research-affiliated development roles.
What documents should you prepare before an employer files your H-1B petition?
You'll need official transcripts, your degree certificate, and any foreign credential evaluation if your degree is from outside the U.S. If your degree field doesn't directly match fundraising, a detailed resume showing progressive responsibility in development roles helps establish the specialty occupation connection. Your employer's attorney will also need a signed offer letter specifying your title, duties, salary, and work location before filing Form I-129 with USCIS.
