Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship in Gastroenterologist
Verify your ECFMG certification before applying
ECFMG certification is a prerequisite for H-1B sponsorship of foreign-trained gastroenterologists. Confirm your certification is active and that your fellowship completion documents are ready before you begin employer outreach.
Target cap-exempt employers for faster filing
Hospitals affiliated with universities and nonprofit research institutions can file H-1B petitions outside the annual cap. These employers aren't bound by the April lottery window, so you can start and finish the process year-round.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified H-1B sponsors
Search Migrate Mate to identify gastroenterology employers with confirmed H-1B LCA filing history, filtered by location and role. This lets you focus outreach on practices that have already navigated the sponsorship process.
Confirm the prevailing wage tier in your target market
Your offered salary must meet the DOL prevailing wage for your specific GI role and geography. Use the OFLC Wage Search to check Level III or IV wages before negotiating, since academic centers and private groups often benchmark differently.
Understand the employer's LCA filing timeline
The Labor Condition Application must be certified by DOL before USCIS receives the I-129 petition. Ask prospective employers whether they use in-house immigration counsel or outside firms, since this affects how quickly the process can move after you sign an offer.
Account for state medical licensure in your start date
Most GI employers require an active state medical license before your start date, not just board eligibility. Licensure timelines vary by state and can run 60 to 120 days, which affects when your employer can realistically file your H-1B petition.

Find Gastroenterologist JobsGastroenterologist H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a gastroenterologist role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. Gastroenterology requires a medical degree, residency, and GI fellowship, which satisfies USCIS's specialty occupation standard requiring at minimum a bachelor's degree in a specific field. The advanced subspecialty training makes this one of the clearer-cut cases. You'll still need to document your degree equivalency if you trained outside the U.S.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for gastroenterologists?
Academic medical centers, hospital systems, and large multispecialty groups are the most active H-1B sponsors for GI physicians. Community hospitals and nonprofit health systems also file regularly. Small private practices sponsor less frequently because of the administrative and legal costs involved. Search Migrate Mate to find employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history in your target region.
Can a gastroenterologist avoid the H-1B lottery?
If your employer qualifies as cap-exempt, your petition bypasses the annual lottery entirely. Qualifying employers include hospitals affiliated with universities and certain nonprofit research organizations. Cap-exempt status depends on the employer's designation, not your role. Confirm cap-exempt eligibility with your prospective employer before counting on year-round filing availability.
What documents does a gastroenterologist need for H-1B sponsorship?
Your employer's immigration attorney will need your medical school diploma, ECFMG certification, fellowship completion certificate, board certification or eligibility documentation, CV, and copies of any prior U.S. immigration documents. If your degree is from a non-U.S. institution, a credential evaluation confirming equivalency to a U.S. medical degree is also required before USCIS will process the petition.
How does the O*NET classification affect H-1B eligibility for GI physicians?
O*NET classifies gastroenterologists under physicians and surgeons, a category with a Job Zone 5 designation reflecting the doctoral-level education and extended training required. This classification supports the specialty occupation argument in your H-1B petition. Your employer's attorney will reference the O*NET profile and SOC code when documenting that the role meets USCIS's minimum degree requirement standard.
