Verify your credential meets specialty occupation
H-1B approval for Orthodontic Assistant roles hinges on proving the job requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Pull the O*NET occupation profile for your job code to document the degree requirement before your employer files.
Target dental service organizations over solo practices
Large dental service organizations file LCAs regularly and have established HR processes for H-1B sponsorship. Solo orthodontic offices rarely have the infrastructure to navigate USCIS filing requirements, so filtering by employer size saves time.
Search verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Orthodontic Assistant openings by employers with confirmed LCA filing history in your occupation code, so you're only applying where sponsorship infrastructure already exists.
Check the prevailing wage before accepting an offer
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage meeting the DOL prevailing wage for your location and job level. Run the OFLC Wage Search for SOC code 31-9011 in your metro area before negotiating, so you know the floor your offer must clear.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before signing anything
USCIS requires H-1B employers to be E-Verify participants. Ask your prospective employer for their E-Verify company ID during the offer stage. An unenrolled employer can't file your petition regardless of intent.

Find Orthodontic Assistant JobsOrthodontic Assistant H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Orthodontic Assistant role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the employer defines the position. If the job description requires a bachelor's degree or higher in dental hygiene, biology, or a directly related field, it can qualify. Roles that accept candidates with only a certificate or associate degree typically don't meet the specialty occupation standard USCIS applies, so the job posting language matters significantly.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Orthodontic Assistants?
Dental service organizations, hospital-affiliated dental clinics, and academic dental centers are the most consistent H-1B sponsors in this field because they have dedicated HR teams familiar with the filing process. Private orthodontic practices occasionally sponsor, but they're less likely to have prior LCA filing history. You can find employers with verified sponsorship history on Migrate Mate.
Can my employer file an H-1B petition for an Orthodontic Assistant role if they've never sponsored before?
Yes, but there's more groundwork involved. A first-time sponsoring employer must register for USCIS's H-1B electronic registration system, file an LCA with DOL, and ensure E-Verify enrollment before submitting the I-129 petition. First-time sponsors benefit from working with an immigration attorney who can structure the job description to meet specialty occupation requirements.
What happens to my H-1B status if I change orthodontic employers mid-sponsorship?
You can transfer your H-1B to a new employer through H-1B portability, provided the new employer files a new I-129 petition before your current status expires and the new role is in the same or a related occupational classification. You can begin working for the new employer once the transfer petition is filed, without waiting for final USCIS approval.
How does the prevailing wage requirement affect Orthodontic Assistant job offers?
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for Orthodontic Assistant work in your geographic area, certified through an LCA before your petition is filed. The prevailing wage is set by wage level and metro area using DOL occupational wage data. Offers below that floor will fail the LCA stage. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the applicable wage for your location before evaluating an offer.
