Verify your degree meets specialty occupation requirements
H-1B eligibility requires a U.S. bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in orthoptics, vision science, or a directly related field. If your degree is from outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved agency before applying.
Target academic medical centers and pediatric hospitals
University-affiliated eye institutes and children's hospitals with dedicated orthoptics departments file H-1B petitions more consistently than private optometry chains. Focus your search on institutions with established international hiring pipelines for clinical allied health roles.
Search verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter orthoptist-related roles by employers with confirmed H-1B LCA filing history. This removes guesswork about which employers will sponsor and surfaces opportunities matched to your clinical specialty.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your role and location. Run the OFLC Wage Search using the relevant SOC code for orthoptists before your offer stage so you understand the floor your employer is legally required to meet.
Confirm H-1B cap exemption status with your employer
Hospitals affiliated with universities or nonprofit research institutions may qualify as cap-exempt H-1B employers, meaning you can file outside the annual lottery window. Ask HR directly whether the entity holds cap-exempt status before committing to a lottery-dependent timeline.
File premium processing if your start date is time-sensitive
USCIS offers premium processing for H-1B petitions, guaranteeing a response within 15 business days. If your current authorization is expiring or your employer needs you on-site by a specific date, request that your employer elect premium processing at filing.

Find Orthoptist JobsOrthoptist H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an orthoptist role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. Orthoptists diagnose and treat disorders of eye movement and binocular vision, a role that USCIS recognizes as a specialty occupation because it requires at least a bachelor's degree in orthoptics, vision science, or a closely related clinical discipline. Employers document the degree requirement in the Labor Condition Application filed with DOL before petitioning USCIS.
How do I find employers who sponsor H-1B visas for orthoptist roles?
Migrate Mate lets you browse orthoptist-related positions filtered by employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history. Academic ophthalmology departments, pediatric hospitals, and large multi-specialty eye care groups are the most consistent sponsors. Checking DOL disclosure data through the OFLC before applying confirms whether a specific employer has filed for similar roles in the past.
Are orthoptist positions at university hospitals cap-exempt?
They can be. Employers that are nonprofit institutions of higher education, affiliated nonprofit entities, or nonprofit research organizations may qualify for H-1B cap exemption. If your prospective employer holds that status, your petition can be filed at any time of year without entering the annual lottery, which significantly simplifies your hiring timeline.
What happens to my H-1B status if I move from one orthoptics employer to another?
H-1B portability under AC21 allows you to start working for a new employer once they file a non-frivolous H-1B transfer petition on your behalf, without waiting for approval. Your current H-1B must have been approved and you must have been maintaining valid status. The new employer files a fresh I-129 and Labor Condition Application specific to your new position.
Can a foreign-trained orthoptist use overseas clinical experience toward the H-1B degree requirement?
Yes, if a credential evaluator determines your foreign education and relevant work experience together are equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree in a specialty-occupation field. USCIS accepts three years of specialized work experience as a substitute for one year of formal education, so documented clinical orthoptics experience can help bridge gaps for applicants with shorter degree programs.
