Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as an Outreach Specialist
Frame your degree as specialty occupation proof
USCIS requires your degree field to directly relate to outreach work. A communications, public health, or social work degree strengthens your petition. Document how your coursework maps to your specific job duties before your employer files the I-129.
Target employers with LCA filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter Outreach Specialist roles by employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for this occupation code, so you're only applying to organizations with active H-1B sponsorship experience.
Verify prevailing wage before accepting an offer
Check the OFLC Wage Search for your exact job location and SOC code before negotiating. Your offered salary must meet the DOL prevailing wage level, and underpaid offers can trigger LCA certification issues during filing.
Identify cap-exempt employers in outreach fields
Nonprofits affiliated with universities, public health agencies, and research institutions are often H-1B cap-exempt. Outreach roles at these organizations can be filed any time of year, bypassing the annual lottery entirely.
Clarify your SOC code during the offer stage
Outreach Specialist roles are filed under varying SOC codes depending on the industry. Ask your employer which occupation code they plan to use before the LCA is submitted, since the code determines your prevailing wage level and affects petition strength.
Use O*NET to document specialty occupation status
Pull the O*NET occupation profile for your SOC code and confirm the role lists a bachelor's degree as the typical education requirement. This supports your employer's specialty occupation argument if USCIS issues a Request for Evidence.
H-1B Visa Outreach Specialist: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Outreach Specialist role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the role is defined. USCIS requires a direct relationship between the job duties and a specific degree field. Outreach roles grounded in public health, social work, communications, or community development typically qualify when the employer can document that a bachelor's degree in one of those fields is a standard industry requirement for the position.
Which employers commonly sponsor H-1B visas for Outreach Specialist positions?
Nonprofit organizations, public health agencies, university-affiliated programs, and government contractors are among the most active sponsors for outreach roles. Many of these employers are cap-exempt, meaning they can file H-1B petitions year-round without competing in the annual lottery. Browse verified sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate to find organizations with confirmed LCA filing history for this job title.
What happens to my H-1B status if my Outreach Specialist role changes significantly after I'm sponsored?
Material changes to your job duties, title, or work location can require your employer to file an amended H-1B petition with USCIS. If your outreach role shifts from, say, community health work to a primarily administrative function, the specialty occupation basis may need to be re-established. Confirm with your employer before accepting any significant role changes.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new employer if I find a different Outreach Specialist job?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file a transfer petition, provided you're in valid H-1B status and the new role is in a specialty occupation. The receiving employer files a new LCA and I-129 petition. You don't need to wait for approval before starting work under the new sponsor.
How does the prevailing wage requirement affect Outreach Specialist H-1B petitions?
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your occupation, experience level, and work location before USCIS will approve the petition. Outreach Specialist wages vary significantly by industry and geography, so the LCA wage level matters. Use the OFLC Wage Search to check the applicable wage tier for your specific location and SOC code before your employer submits the LCA.
