H-1B Visa Pathologist Jobs
Pathologist roles qualify as H-1B specialty occupations under USCIS guidelines, requiring a medical degree and state licensure. Academic medical centers, hospital systems, and reference labs actively file H-1B petitions for pathologists. Board certification in anatomic or clinical pathology strengthens your petition and supports prevailing wage compliance at Level III or IV.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship in Pathologist
Confirm your board certification pathway early
USCIS scrutinizes whether your foreign medical degree and residency training satisfy U.S. specialty occupation standards. Having American Board of Pathology eligibility documented before your employer files removes a common RFE trigger in pathologist petitions.
Target employers with cap-exempt filing authority
Academic medical centers and hospital systems affiliated with universities can file H-1B petitions year-round outside the annual cap lottery. Prioritize faculty-track or research-integrated pathologist roles at these institutions to avoid lottery timing uncertainty.
Search verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Filter pathologist openings by employers with documented H-1B LCA filing history using Migrate Mate. This narrows your search to employers who have actively sponsored pathologists, not just those who list sponsorship as theoretically possible.
Request the LCA before signing any offer
Your employer must file a Labor Condition Application with DOL and post it at your work location before USCIS adjudicates your H-1B. Confirm the LCA is in process and that your offered wage meets the prevailing wage for your subspecialty using the OFLC Wage Search.
Document subspecialty training for SOC code alignment
Pathology covers multiple SOC codes depending on subspecialty, and a mismatch between your training and the employer's LCA SOC code invites scrutiny. Pull your O*NET occupation profile and verify it aligns with your fellowship training and the specific role scope.
Use premium processing if your start date is fixed
USCIS offers premium processing for H-1B petitions, returning a decision within 15 business days. If your hospital credentialing timeline or a fellowship end date creates a hard start window, premium processing reduces the risk of a gap in authorized employment.

Find Pathologist JobsPathologist H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a pathologist role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. Pathology requires a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, followed by residency training and typically fellowship-level subspecialty training. USCIS classifies roles requiring this level of education as specialty occupations. Board certification through the American Board of Pathology further strengthens the classification and reduces the likelihood of a Request for Evidence on the educational requirement.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for pathologists?
Academic medical centers, large hospital networks, Veterans Affairs facilities, and national reference laboratories are the most active H-1B sponsors for pathologist roles. Academic and government-affiliated hospitals often qualify as cap-exempt employers, meaning they can file outside the annual H-1B lottery. You can identify employers with documented LCA filing history for pathologist roles through Migrate Mate.
How does state medical licensure affect my H-1B petition as a pathologist?
USCIS requires that you hold or be eligible for the state medical license required to practice at your employer's location. Many states allow you to file for H-1B approval while your full license is pending, provided you have a temporary or training license. Your employer should confirm the licensure requirement in the specialty occupation letter included with the I-129 petition to avoid adjudication delays.
Can I switch pathologist employers while on H-1B status?
Yes, under H-1B portability rules established by AC21, you can start working for a new employer once they file a new I-129 petition on your behalf, as long as your prior H-1B was approved and you've been in valid status. Your new employer must file a Labor Condition Application with DOL and submit the I-129 before your current authorized period ends. There's no cap-lottery requirement for transfers.
What prevailing wage level applies to most pathologist H-1B filings?
Most pathologist positions are filed at DOL prevailing wage Level III or Level IV, reflecting the experienced and fully competent nature of independent diagnostic work. The specific wage depends on your SOC code, work location, and subspecialty. You can look up the applicable prevailing wage for your role and location using the OFLC Wage Search before negotiating your offer, so you understand the floor your employer must meet.
