Verify your specialty occupation credentials early
H-1B approval for engineering manager roles hinges on demonstrating that a bachelor's degree in a directly related field is a normal requirement. Pull your O*NET profile for this occupation to confirm the Job Zone and typical education requirements before you apply.
Target employers with active LCA filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter Product Engineering Manager roles by verified DOL Labor Condition Application filings, so you're applying only to employers who have already demonstrated H-1B sponsorship capability for this specific role type.
Separate cap-subject from cap-exempt employers
Universities, nonprofits affiliated with universities, and government research organizations are cap-exempt, meaning they can sponsor your H-1B outside the annual 85,000-slot lottery. If you've been selected before, transfers to new employers also skip the cap.
Document your team leadership scope precisely
USCIS scrutinizes engineering manager petitions where the role blends technical execution with management. Your offer letter and support letter should clearly quantify direct reports, budget authority, and the degree of specialized knowledge required to lead the product engineering function.
Check prevailing wage level before negotiating your offer
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your SOC code and metro area. Run your job title and location through the OFLC Wage Search to know your Level I through Level IV range before salary discussions begin.
Plan your H-1B timeline around the October 1 start date
Cap-subject H-1B petitions filed after lottery selection can't start before October 1 of that fiscal year. If you're changing employers mid-year, confirm whether your new role qualifies for H-1B transfer portability once your petition is receipted by USCIS.
H-1B Visa Product Engineering Manager: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Product Engineering Manager role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or a closely related field. USCIS looks at whether the degree requirement is standard for the role across the industry, not just at your specific employer. Roles that accept any bachelor's degree regardless of field can face RFEs, so the job description wording matters significantly.
How do I find Product Engineering Manager jobs at H-1B sponsoring companies?
Migrate Mate surfaces Product Engineering Manager listings filtered by verified DOL LCA filing history, so every role you see comes from an employer who has already filed H-1B petitions. This removes the guesswork of cold-applying to companies that list sponsorship as open but have no documented filing track record in engineering management.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new employer for a Product Engineering Manager role?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can start working for a new employer as soon as the transfer petition is receipted by USCIS, as long as you were previously in valid H-1B status. Your new employer files a new I-129 petition, and you don't need to wait for full approval before beginning the role.
What documentation does an employer need to sponsor an H-1B for this role?
Your employer files a Labor Condition Application with the DOL, which certifies the offered wage meets the prevailing wage for your SOC code and work location. They then file Form I-129 with USCIS, supported by an offer letter, a detailed job description establishing specialty occupation, and evidence of your qualifying degree in a related field.
Does the H-1B lottery affect Product Engineering Manager roles differently than other tech jobs?
No, the same 85,000-slot annual cap applies. However, engineering managers who hold a U.S. master's degree or higher are eligible for the advanced-degree exemption pool, which gives those petitions two lottery draws instead of one, modestly improving selection odds within the cap-subject process.
