Verify your degree supports specialty occupation
H-1B eligibility depends on a direct relationship between your degree field and the coordinator role. A general business or management degree usually qualifies, but a degree in an unrelated field creates RFE risk. Pull your O*NET profile for SOC code 11-3021 to confirm the stated education requirement.
Target employers with active LCA filing history
Search Migrate Mate to filter Project Management Coordinator roles by employers who have previously certified LCAs with DOL. Prior filings signal an established sponsorship process, which reduces delays during your H-1B petition and cap registration window.
Confirm prevailing wage level before negotiating
Your offered salary must meet the DOL prevailing wage for the role at the work location. Run the OFLC Wage Search using SOC code 11-3021 and your metro area before entering negotiations so you know the Level I through Level IV thresholds your employer must certify.
Ask whether your employer uses cap-exempt institutions
Coordinators placed at universities, nonprofit research organizations, or government entities may be filed under a cap-exempt petition, bypassing the annual lottery entirely. Ask hiring managers directly whether the end client or worksite qualifies, especially in project-based staffing or consulting arrangements.
Time your job search around the cap registration window
USCIS opens H-1B cap registration each year in March for petitions with an October 1 start date. If you're on OPT, structure your offer letter timeline so your employer can register during that window. Missing it means waiting a full year for the next cycle.
Document project scope and degree nexus before filing
USCIS frequently issues RFEs for coordinator titles arguing the role doesn't require a specific degree. Your employer's support letter should describe discrete technical or analytical deliverables tied to your degree field, not just administrative coordination tasks, to withstand that scrutiny.

Find Project Management Coordinator JobsProject Management Coordinator H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Project Management Coordinator role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the role is defined. USCIS requires that the position normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific related field. Coordinator titles that emphasize administrative support rather than technical or analytical work can face RFEs. Roles tied to IT, engineering, or financial projects with clear degree requirements in those fields have a stronger case. Your employer's job description and support letter need to make that connection explicit.
How do I find Project Management Coordinator employers that sponsor H-1B visas?
Migrate Mate filters coordinator roles by employers with verified DOL LCA filing history, so you're only seeing companies that have gone through the H-1B process before. You can also cross-reference the OFLC public disclosure data, which lists every certified LCA by employer name, job title, and work location, to confirm a company's recent filing activity before applying.
What happens to my H-1B status if my Project Management Coordinator contract ends early?
You have a 60-day grace period after your employment ends to find a new H-1B employer, change status, or depart the U.S. Your new employer must file an H-1B transfer petition before that window closes. If you're on a project-based contract, build this timeline into your job search so you're not starting from zero during the grace period.
Can a staffing agency sponsor my H-1B for a Project Management Coordinator placement?
Yes, but USCIS scrutinizes third-party placement arrangements closely for coordinator roles. The staffing agency is the petitioner and must demonstrate that the end client's position qualifies as a specialty occupation. You'll need documentation from the end client confirming the role requirements and duration. USCIS may also require an itinerary if you'll work across multiple sites.
What SOC code is used for Project Management Coordinator roles on an LCA?
Most Project Management Coordinator positions are filed under SOC code 11-3021, which covers Project Management Specialists and Business Operations Specialists. Your employer selects the code when filing the LCA with DOL, and it determines the prevailing wage level USCIS will check against your offered salary. Verify the code matches your actual duties using O*NET before your employer submits the LCA.
