Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship in PT
Verify your DPT meets H-1B requirements
USCIS requires a directly related bachelor's degree or higher for specialty occupation status. A DPT satisfies this, but if your degree is from a foreign institution, get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved agency before employers begin the LCA process.
Target rehab networks with LCA filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter PT roles by employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for physical therapist positions. This tells you which organizations have active H-1B sponsorship infrastructure, not just stated willingness to sponsor.
Confirm state licensure before your start date
Your H-1B petition is tied to a specific state worksite. USCIS requires you to hold a valid PT license in that state before your employment begins. Delays in state board processing can jeopardize your petition timeline, so initiate licensure applications as soon as you have a job offer.
Understand how prevailing wage affects your offer
Your employer must certify your wage meets the DOL prevailing wage for physical therapists in your worksite's metropolitan area. Run the OFLC Wage Search before negotiating your offer so you know whether the salary proposed meets the Level I or Level II threshold for your location.
Ask about premium processing before accepting the offer
Standard H-1B adjudication can take several months. If your OPT or other status expires before approval, ask the employer upfront whether they will file Form I-907 for premium processing, which USCIS typically adjudicates within 15 business days.
Check the O*NET profile to support your petition
If your employer needs to document specialty occupation status for USCIS, the O*NET profile for physical therapists confirms the role requires a professional-level degree. Share this with your employer's attorney if an RFE cites specialty occupation as a concern.

Find PT JobsPT H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Do PT roles qualify as H-1B specialty occupations?
Yes. Physical therapist positions qualify as H-1B specialty occupations because USCIS recognizes that a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree is the standard entry-level requirement for the profession. Your employer documents this in the LCA and I-129 petition. The O*NET profile for physical therapists further supports the degree requirement if USCIS issues an RFE on specialty occupation grounds.
Which types of employers typically sponsor H-1B visas for PTs?
Hospital systems, inpatient rehabilitation centers, outpatient orthopedic clinics, and long-term care networks are the most common H-1B sponsors for physical therapists. Travel PT staffing agencies also sponsor H-1B petitions, though the petition must name a specific worksite. Browse Migrate Mate to see which employers have active LCA filings for PT positions in your target location.
Can I change PT employers after my H-1B is approved?
Yes, under H-1B portability rules you can begin working for a new employer as soon as they file an H-1B transfer petition on your behalf, without waiting for USCIS approval, as long as you have been in valid H-1B status for at least 180 days. Your new employer must file before your current status expires and must obtain a new LCA for the new worksite.
Does my PT license transfer if my H-1B moves to a new state?
State PT licensure does not transfer automatically. If your employer amends your H-1B to add a worksite in a different state, you must apply for licensure in that state and hold a valid license before practicing there. Some states offer reciprocity or expedited endorsement, but you cannot rely on this as a given. Plan for a gap of several weeks to months between application and activation.
How does a PT staffing or travel assignment affect H-1B sponsorship?
Travel PT contracts create H-1B compliance complexity because each new facility placement may constitute a new worksite requiring an amended LCA and, in some cases, an amended I-129 petition. Your sponsoring staffing agency is the employer of record and carries the filing obligation. Confirm before signing a travel contract that the agency has a documented H-1B amendment process for assignment changes.
