H-1B Visa Registered Respiratory Therapist Jobs
Registered Respiratory Therapists qualify for H-1B sponsorship because the role meets USCIS's specialty occupation standard, requiring at least a bachelor's degree in respiratory care or a closely related field. Hospital systems, pulmonary practices, and home health networks regularly file H-1B petitions for credentialed RRTs, and the 85,000-cap annual lottery opens each March.

Verify your NBRC credentials transfer correctly
USCIS scrutinizes whether your degree field directly supports the specialty occupation claim. Confirm your RRT credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care is paired with a bachelor's degree in respiratory care, not just an associate degree, before an employer files.
Target hospital systems with cap-exempt status
Universities and nonprofit research hospitals affiliated with higher education are cap-exempt, meaning they can file H-1B petitions year-round outside the lottery. Respiratory therapy roles at academic medical centers like those attached to university health systems bypass the March registration window entirely.
Search H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate by filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by their DOL Labor Condition Application filing history for respiratory therapy roles, so you're targeting facilities that have actively sponsored RRTs before, not just ones that say they're open to it.
Request premium processing before your OPT expires
If you're transitioning from OPT, ask your employer to file with USCIS premium processing. Standard adjudication can run several months, and cap-gap protection only extends your work authorization if the petition is filed before your EAD end date.
Confirm the LCA wage level matches your experience
DOL requires employers to certify a prevailing wage on the LCA before filing your H-1B petition. Use the OFLC Wage Search to check whether the wage level offered matches your years of RRT experience, since underpayment relative to Level II or III rates can trigger RFEs.
Document state licensure portability across work sites
If your employer operates across multiple states, your H-1B petition must list each work location. Confirm your RRT state license is valid in each state on the petition, since practicing in an unlicensed state creates compliance exposure for both you and the employer.

Find Registered Respiratory Therapist JobsRegistered Respiratory Therapist H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Registered Respiratory Therapist role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes. USCIS recognizes Registered Respiratory Therapist positions as specialty occupations when the employer requires at least a bachelor's degree in respiratory care or a directly related field. An associate degree alone is generally insufficient. If your employer's job description specifies a bachelor's degree as a minimum requirement, the role clears the specialty occupation threshold. The O*NET occupation profile for respiratory therapists supports this classification.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Registered Respiratory Therapists?
Hospital systems, academic medical centers, home health agencies, pulmonary rehabilitation clinics, and long-term acute care facilities are the most frequent H-1B sponsors for RRTs. Academic medical centers affiliated with universities are often cap-exempt, meaning they can file year-round. You can browse employers with verified H-1B filing history for respiratory therapy roles on Migrate Mate.
How does the H-1B lottery affect RRT job seekers?
Cap-subject H-1B registrations open each March for the fiscal year starting October 1. USCIS conducts a random lottery when registrations exceed the 85,000 annual cap. If you're selected, your employer then has 90 days to file the full petition. RRTs at cap-exempt employers, including nonprofits attached to universities, bypass the lottery entirely and can start at any time of year.
Can I switch RRT jobs while on an H-1B without restarting the process?
Yes, under H-1B portability rules established by AC21, you can begin working for a new employer once they file a new H-1B petition on your behalf, as long as your current H-1B has been approved for at least 180 days. The new employer must file before you start. The role must still qualify as a specialty occupation, and your RRT license must be valid in the new work state.
What should I check before accepting an RRT job offer that includes H-1B sponsorship?
Confirm the employer will file before the cap registration deadline if they're cap-subject, or verify their cap-exempt status if they claim it. Ask whether they'll cover USCIS filing fees, and check that the offered wage meets the prevailing wage for your experience level using the OFLC Wage Search. Also verify the job description explicitly requires a bachelor's degree, not just an associate degree with licensure.
