Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Repair Technician
Verify your degree supports specialty occupation
H-1B approval for Repair Technician roles hinges on proving the position requires a specific bachelor's degree. Check the O*NET profile for your SOC code to confirm the degree requirements USCIS reviewers will reference during adjudication.
Target employers enrolled in E-Verify
Manufacturers, defense contractors, and utilities that hold federal contracts are required to use E-Verify and tend to have established H-1B sponsorship processes. Focusing on these industries reduces the chance of finding an employer unfamiliar with the filing requirements.
Search LCA-verified employers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Repair Technician openings by employers with confirmed H-1B Labor Condition Application filing history. This narrows your search to companies that have already sponsored the role, not just companies open to the idea.
Confirm the prevailing wage tier before negotiating
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your job title and location. Look up the applicable wage level using the OFLC Wage Search before your offer conversation so you understand the floor your employer is committing to.
Ask employers about cap-exempt filing options
Repair Technician roles at universities, nonprofit research organizations, or government entities may qualify for cap-exempt H-1B filing, bypassing the annual lottery. If you're open to those sectors, ask HR directly whether the organization has cap-exempt status before the offer stage.
Prepare a duties letter that maps to specialty occupation
Your employer's support letter must show your Repair Technician duties require theoretical and practical application of a specific body of engineering or technical knowledge. Work with your employer to document complex diagnostics, systems integration, or engineering-level troubleshooting rather than listing general repair tasks.
H-1B Visa Repair Technician: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Repair Technician role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the role is defined. A general repair technician position may not qualify, but roles requiring a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechatronics, or a closely related field can meet the specialty occupation standard. The employer must demonstrate that the theoretical and practical application of that specific degree is a normal requirement for the position, not just a preference.
Which industries are most likely to sponsor H-1B visas for Repair Technicians?
Manufacturing, aerospace, defense, medical equipment, and utilities are the industries with the strongest H-1B filing history for technician-level roles that require engineering degrees. Companies producing complex electronic systems, industrial machinery, or specialized diagnostic equipment are more likely to have established H-1B sponsorship processes. You can find employers with verified filing history on Migrate Mate.
What documentation does my employer need to file an H-1B for a Repair Technician position?
Your employer needs a certified Labor Condition Application from DOL, a signed support letter detailing why the role requires a specific degree, and your academic credentials. If your degree is from outside the U.S., a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved evaluator is typically required. USCIS will scrutinize whether the job duties align with the stated degree requirement, so the duties description in the LCA is critical.
Can I stay in the U.S. while my employer files my H-1B if I'm currently on OPT?
Yes. If you're on OPT and your employer files your H-1B before April 1 of the cap year and you're selected in the lottery, the cap-gap rule extends your OPT authorization through September 30 of that year. If you have a STEM OPT extension, your work authorization continues until your H-1B start date. You must remain employed by the same sponsoring employer during this period.
What happens to my H-1B if my employer eliminates my Repair Technician position?
Your H-1B status is tied to the specific employer and role. If your position is eliminated, you enter a 60-day grace period to find a new sponsoring employer, transfer your H-1B, change to another status, or depart the U.S. A new employer must file an H-1B transfer petition before your grace period expires to maintain your work authorization.
