Document your SAP landscape administration experience
Build a detailed record of every SAP system you've managed: release versions, database platforms, transport management, and client environments. USCIS scrutinizes specialty occupation claims for Basis roles, so documented system-level complexity strengthens your petition.
Target consulting firms with dedicated SAP practices
SAP implementation and managed-services firms file H-1B petitions year after year for Basis roles. Prioritize employers whose DOL Labor Condition Applications list SOC code 15-1299 or 15-1244, which signals active Basis hiring.
Use Migrate Mate to filter by verified LCA filings
Search for SAP Basis Consultant roles on Migrate Mate to see which employers have active DOL Labor Condition Applications for this job title, so you're applying to companies with a documented H-1B sponsorship track record rather than guessing.
Verify prevailing wage level before accepting an offer
Run your target metro area and SOC code through the OFLC Wage Search before negotiations. Your offered salary must meet at least Level I prevailing wage or USCIS may issue a Request for Evidence challenging the petition's legitimacy.
File before the April cap lottery, not after selection
H-1B registration opens in early March for a 14-day window. Your employer must register you before selection, not after. Missing registration means waiting a full year, so confirm your prospective employer's timeline as early as the offer-letter stage.
Request premium processing if your project start date is firm
USCIS premium processing guarantees a decision within 15 business days. For Basis roles tied to go-live dates or client contract start dates, this prevents a standard 3-to-5 month adjudication timeline from derailing your deployment schedule.
H-1B Visa SAP Basis Consultant: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an SAP Basis Consultant role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, SAP Basis Consultant positions typically satisfy the specialty occupation standard because the role requires at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field. USCIS evaluates whether the specific duties, such as system administration, transport management, and landscape architecture, genuinely require that degree-level knowledge rather than general IT experience.
Which types of employers most commonly sponsor H-1B visas for SAP Basis Consultants?
SAP consulting and implementation firms, large ERP managed-services providers, and Fortune 500 companies running internal SAP landscapes are the most active sponsors. Consulting firms often file cap-exempt petitions for university clients, which bypasses the annual lottery. You can browse verified LCA-filing employers for this role on Migrate Mate.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new SAP employer mid-project?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can begin working for a new employer as soon as your transfer petition is filed, not after it's approved, provided you've maintained valid status. Your new employer files a fresh I-129 petition describing your Basis duties, and the DOL issues a new Labor Condition Application tied to the new worksite and wage level.
How does a multi-site SAP engagement affect my H-1B petition?
If your Basis role requires you to work at client sites in multiple states, each worksite must be covered by a certified Labor Condition Application listing the correct prevailing wage for that location. Your employer must post the LCA at each worksite and, if a new location is added mid-petition, file an amended I-129 with USCIS before you begin work there.
What happens to my H-1B status if my SAP project ends before my petition expires?
If your employer terminates your employment before the petition end date, you have a 60-day grace period to find a new sponsor, file a change of status, or depart the country. Proactively seeking a new SAP Basis role through the H-1B transfer process is the fastest path to maintaining continuous authorization without restarting the cap lottery.
