Verify your degree aligns with the role
USCIS requires your degree field to directly relate to the specialty occupation. For Security Sales Engineers, degrees in computer science, cybersecurity, or electrical engineering are strongest. A business or marketing degree alone may trigger an RFE.
Search LCA filings by occupation code
Security Sales Engineer maps to SOC code 41-3099 or 15-1212 depending on how the employer classifies the role. Use the OFLC Wage Search to identify which companies have filed LCAs for this title and which prevailing wage level they certified.
Target employers with pre-sales engineering teams
Companies with dedicated pre-sales or solutions engineering departments file H-1B petitions more routinely than those where sales engineers work as generalists. Cybersecurity vendors, managed security service providers, and cloud platform companies are the most active sponsors for this specific hybrid role.
Use Migrate Mate to filter verified sponsors
Pull up Security Sales Engineer listings on Migrate Mate to see which employers have active H-1B filing history for this occupation. That filtering step cuts out roles where sponsorship is listed as possible but rarely executed in practice.
Clarify the job classification before your offer letter
Some employers file Security Sales Engineers under a sales SOC code rather than a technical one. The SOC code drives the prevailing wage level and affects RFE risk. Confirm with HR which code they plan to use before the I-129 is prepared.
Time your application around the cap and lottery
H-1B cap petitions can only be filed once per fiscal year, with a registration window in March and an October 1 start date if selected. If you're negotiating an offer in late spring, factor in that your start date may be nearly 18 months out from registration.
H-1B Visa Security Sales Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Security Sales Engineer role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the employer requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as computer science, cybersecurity, or electrical engineering. The technical depth of the role matters. If the position primarily involves sales with only light technical overlay, USCIS may question whether a specific degree is actually required, so the job description needs to clearly reflect the engineering component.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Security Sales Engineers?
Cybersecurity vendors, cloud infrastructure providers, and managed security service providers are the most active sponsors for this role. Employers with large enterprise sales teams and dedicated pre-sales engineering functions file H-1B petitions for this title most consistently. Browse Security Sales Engineer roles with verified H-1B filing history on Migrate Mate to identify which companies are actively sponsoring.
What SOC code applies to Security Sales Engineer H-1B petitions?
Employers most commonly file Security Sales Engineers under SOC 15-1212 (Information Security Analysts) or 41-3099 (Sales Representatives, Services, All Other), depending on how technical the role is. The SOC code determines the prevailing wage level USCIS and DOL will expect. A technical classification typically supports a stronger specialty occupation argument. You can cross-reference the O*NET occupation profile to see which classification better fits the duties in your offer letter.
Can I switch employers mid-H-1B if I'm a Security Sales Engineer?
Yes. H-1B portability allows you to start working for a new employer once they file an H-1B transfer petition, without waiting for approval, as long as you've been in valid H-1B status for at least 180 days. Your new employer files a new I-129, and USCIS reviews the role independently. The specialty occupation standard applies again, so the new job description needs to hold up to scrutiny on its own merits.
How does the H-1B prevailing wage requirement affect Security Sales Engineer hiring?
DOL requires your employer to certify on the LCA that your offered wage meets or exceeds the prevailing wage for the role and location. Security Sales Engineer wages vary significantly by metro area and by whether the role is classified as a sales or technical occupation. You can check prevailing wage levels for your location and SOC code using the OFLC Wage Search before entering offer negotiations.
