H-1B Visa Senior Backend Developer Jobs
Senior Backend Developer roles in distributed systems, API architecture, and cloud infrastructure consistently rank among the most H-1B visa-sponsored positions in tech. Employers filing LCAs for backend engineers must certify a prevailing wage tied to your SOC code and experience level, which directly shapes your offer negotiation and petition timeline.

ABOUT ROCKEFELLER CAPITAL MANAGEMENT:
Rockefeller Capital Management was established in 2018 as a leading independent financial advisory services firm. Originally founded in 1882 as the family office of John D. Rockefeller, the Firm has evolved to offer strategic advice to ultra- and high-net-worth individuals and families, institutions, and corporations from offices in 33 markets throughout the United States, as well as an office in London. The Firm oversees $212 billion in client assets as of April 30, 2026.
POSITION:
We are seeking a Senior Backend Developer to join our Platform Development team. This role splits focus between two areas: building the APIs and services that power our internal applications and designing and evolving the databases behind them. Our advisors and operations teams rely on dashboards, workflows, and integrations daily — you'll own the backend systems and data architecture that make them work.
This is a hands-on senior role. You'll design database schemas, normalize data models, write and tune complex queries and build the .NET APIs that expose that data to consumers. We have active database projects that need someone who thinks carefully about data modeling — not just someone who can write a SELECT statement. Our stack is .NET/C# on Azure with SQL Server, and we're looking for someone who goes deep on backend and database fundamentals rather than broad across the full stack.
Responsibilities:
- Design and build backend services and RESTful APIs using C#/.NET, deployed on Microsoft Azure (App Service, Azure Functions, API Management)
- Design and evolve database schemas — data modeling, normalization, indexing strategies, referential integrity, and migration planning for SQL Server databases
- Write and optimize complex SQL queries, stored procedures, and views; troubleshoot performance issues across large datasets
- Architect event-driven integrations using Azure Service Bus, Event Grid, or similar messaging infrastructure
- Ensure security and compliance through secure coding practices, identity management (Entra ID), and adherence to OWASP standards
- Drive reliability and performance — implement observability (Application Insights, structured logging), manage incidents, and optimize service performance
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions) for automated testing, deployment, and environment management
- Mentor engineers, conduct thorough code reviews, and establish backend engineering standards across the team
- Collaborate with front-end engineers and product teams to define API contracts, scope features, and deliver incremental releases
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field (or equivalent practical experience)
- 5-10 years of professional software development experience with a focus on backend/API development
- Proven experience owning database architecture decisions (not just consuming existing schemas)
- Experience designing and operating services on Microsoft Azure (App Service, Azure Functions, API Management, Service Bus, Event Grid)
- Experience working in regulated environments, preferably financial services
SKILLS:
- Strong expertise in C#/.NET (ASP.NET Core Web API)
-
Deep database skills, including:
-
Schema design and normalization
- Migration planning
- Indexing strategies
-
Query performance optimization across large datasets
-
Solid understanding of distributed systems patterns, messaging, and event-driven architecture
- Identity and access management (Entra ID / Azure AD, OAuth 2.0, managed identities)
- Observability tools (Application Insights, structured logging, alerting)
- CI/CD and DevOps practices (GitHub Actions, infrastructure as code using Bicep or Terraform)
- Testing frameworks and practices (unit, integration, contract testing)
- Experience with containerization (Docker) and microservices architecture
- Familiarity with data platforms (Databricks, Microsoft Fabric) — preferred but not required
COMPENSATION RANGE:
The anticipated base salary range for this role is $130,000 to $150,000. Base salary for the role will depend on several factors, including a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies, and experience, and may fall outside of the range shown. In addition, this role may be eligible for a discretionary bonus. Rockefeller Capital Management offers a comprehensive benefit package including health coverage, vacation time, paid leave, retirement plan, and more.

Verify your SOC code before applying
Backend developer roles get filed under different SOC codes depending on the employer. Pull the O*NET profile for your target title and cross-reference it with recent LCA filings to confirm the wage level your employer will certify before you reach the offer stage.
Target cap-exempt employers strategically
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and certain government-affiliated entities are cap-exempt, so you skip the lottery entirely. If you're between H-1B selections, backend roles at these organizations let you start work without waiting for an October 1 start date.
Use Migrate Mate to filter verified sponsors
Search Senior Backend Developer roles on Migrate Mate to see employers with confirmed H-1B LCA filing history for this specific role. You'll avoid wasting application cycles on companies that list the title but have no sponsorship track record.
Document architecture ownership for RFE defense
USCIS scrutinizes backend roles that blend engineering with product or DevOps responsibilities. Gather evidence showing you own system design decisions, not just implementation. Performance reviews, design docs, and architecture diagrams strengthen specialty occupation arguments if you receive an RFE.
Negotiate premium processing into your offer
Ask during negotiation whether the employer will file with premium processing. For backend roles that require a specific start date tied to a product launch or team onboarding, the 15-business-day USCIS adjudication window protects both sides from scheduling uncertainty.
Check the OFLC Wage Search before your offer call
Run the OFLC Wage Search for your job title, SOC code, and work location before your compensation discussion. Employers must certify the LCA wage at your assigned level, so knowing Level II versus Level III thresholds in your metro prevents underpay that could trigger a DOL audit.
H-1B Visa Senior Backend Developer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Senior Backend Developer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, provided the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as computer science, software engineering, or a closely related discipline. Generalist job descriptions that list a degree as preferred rather than required can trigger an RFE. Ask your employer to confirm the job description explicitly states a minimum degree requirement before the LCA is filed.
How do I find employers who actively sponsor H-1B visas for backend developer roles?
Search for Senior Backend Developer positions on Migrate Mate, which filters results by employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history for this role. This saves you from applying to companies that post backend roles but route them through third-party vendors or have no sponsorship track record. DOL LCA disclosure data is publicly available and reflects actual filing activity, not self-reported sponsorship claims.
Can I switch backend developer jobs on H-1B without losing my status?
Yes, under AC21 portability you can change employers after your I-140 has been approved and your H-1B petition has been pending for 180 days or more, provided the new role is in the same or a similar occupational classification. For backend engineers moving between companies without a pending I-140, your new employer must file an H-1B transfer petition before your start date at the new company.
What happens to my H-1B status if my backend developer position is eliminated in a layoff?
You have a 60-day grace period from your last day of employment to find a new sponsor, change to another nonimmigrant status, or depart the U.S. During this window you can interview and receive an H-1B transfer petition from a new employer. USCIS does not restart the grace period if you take a short contract role between positions, so treat the 60 days as a firm deadline.
Does working remotely as a Senior Backend Developer affect my H-1B LCA compliance?
Yes. The LCA must list all physical work locations, and if you work from a location not covered by the original LCA for more than 10 consecutive business days, your employer is generally required to file an amended LCA and potentially an amended H-1B petition. Short-term business travel is typically exempt, but a permanent move to a different metro area almost always requires an LCA amendment certified by DOL.
